8N Starter Button

The last thing I have to do in putting back all the wiring that had been stripped out of a 1952 8N I bought is to hook up the starter button that sits on top of the transmission cover. I'm assuming my wire connection is the small metal slot protruding from the side of the button housing. But the button doesn't seem to have any recoil mechanism. When you push it down, it stays down. You have to lift it back up. Are you supposed to manually lift it up in order to disengage the starter after the motor's running?

As you can tell, I'm fairly new to old tractors.

The starter button is supposed to have a spring to make it pop back up. The button is cheap and relativley easy to replace- you'll have to pull off the transmission cover (lift it carefully or you'll drop a little spring and ball into your gears)to unbolt the switch from below.
