I'd like to thank Bruce (Va), Tom N MS, gahorN, & Old for all the tips passed along. The good news is that the flywheel is fine so I'll pull the starter. My question's are: (1)is it worthwhile just replacing the bendix or just replace the whole works (2) I try to support this site on parts but prices differ (12V)$139 here vs. $106 (standard 6V) elsewhere, other sites say 6V works on 12V & my 8N is a conversion. I try and avoid Chinese products if possible. I'd appreciate anyone's input.

You can used either one the 6 volt type or 12 volt type. Only problem with the 6 volts ones is if you spin them to long they get hot and burn up but so will a 12 volt one if you spin them to long just the 6 volt one does it faster. So yes you can use either one on 12 volts. Plus the 6 volt one will spin just a bit faster then the 12 volt one will. Or you could take it to a local alternator/starter shop and have it rebuilt and probably save your self even more $$. My local shop does them and most of them cost around $50-75 to have redone. If you have it rebuilt locally I would have them put on a new bendex because they do waer a lot

Ditto what old said. I've never had a ford genny or starter rebuild cost me more than 80$ max.. and that was with replacing fields and all.. etc..
