8N steering box

Found a set screw plug for lube fill, but have couple questions:
1. gear lube? grease ?
2. also, leaks some at drivers' left arm.
what type stop leak most likely to help.

Hank.......the original early 8N ball-nut steering gearbox did have a square pipe plug fill'em-up and spec'd: 90wt gear oil.

Steering gearbox oil does NOT wear out, but "leaks-out". And low oil will cause WEAR in yer ball-nut UPPER bearing. Causing yer steering wheel to be sloppy and go uppsie'n'downsie (look at yer hub under the steering wheel) as you swing yer steering wheel left-n-rite. Whether or when you replace the upper bearing, depends upon yer tolerance for steering wheel slopp.

This is NOT a gearmesh "adjustment" problem.

We're recommending 2-tubes of John Deere sticky corn-head GREASE. (seriously) It don't leak. But you need to kinda "drain" yer present 90wt oil. Remove yer steering gearbox left roundy plate to drain. Squirt of mineral oil or kerosene or diesel will "flush" yer box good. ......Dell

You need to make one of these to replace the pipe plug.

This is just a standard pipe bushing to bush down to the
size of a grease zerk. I installed it and left it there.
Makes filling up the steering box with corn head grease real easy.

On the left is the original pipe plug, then the pipe bushing,
and on the right I'm sure you know what a grease zerk is.

After you get this installed, get a couple of tubes of
John Deere Corn Head grease, or any other NLGI #0 grease,
and use your grease gun to pump the steering box full.
It's full when grease starts coming out under the steering wheel.

I just changed the seals on both sides of my steering box.

This was posted when I was asking about it:
NAPA part number is 11055

You need the seal that fits INSIDE of the sector housing. The NAPA part number is 11055 and if you get the old ones out you can actually fit two inside the housing as they are thinner than the originals. Be VERY careful putting them in, they bend easily.

Seals for me were about $10 each. Total of $40 for both sides. Ouch.
They were real easy to put in.
