8n Steering Gear Rebuild

I finally received all of the parts needed to do a rebuild on my early 8N steering gear box. Mine has the 4 bolt pattern on the sides.

I did the rebuild on the bench. I think I have the left shaft one tooth off, as the front tires are toed out an inch in the front. All of the adjustment has been made to shorten the tie rods. I do know the right steering gear shaft was lined up correctly as illustrated in the manual. Right in the center.

The steering gear shafts only allow the steering arm to attach in one of four positions. Right now the center of the steering wheel travel places the steering arms pointing approx. 5 deg. forward of straight down. I believe it should be approx. 5 deg.pointed to the rear of the tractor.

Am I on the right track, and if so, is one tooth off causing the error?

Jerry, SG gave you good advise on the service manual - Here's a cross section photo that may help get you on track.

If the steering arms are 5d to rear on each side, trun the steering to right and then left. If the angles are the same on each side then the teeth are aligned properly. After that, align the front tires as best you can with a ruler. Then it is up to the tie rod links. If you have maxed out the lingage you can some times change sides with the rods and regain the needed movement. Good luck, hope this helps.
