8N steering

Is there a way to make steering easier on my 8N? By the end of the day I'm beat. An even worse problem is maneuvering around obstacles. There have been times I could not turn well enough to avoid rocks ect.

is your steering sloppy? is it binding?

a properly working and adjusted and lubed mechanical steering box should move pretty easilly when the tractor is rolling.

do you have a loader? if so, are you using any counterweight?

more info is needed.

On 8n- 600 - 800 - 601 - 801 early 2000 - 4000 I shorten the steering arms (arms on the steering box) 1 1/2" It takes 3 1/4 turns from lock to lock instead of 2 1/4 turns ,almost like power steering (there is enough extra travel in the steering gear)

I don't have a loader attached but sometimes it takes two hands to turn. I will have to check the steering box for oil.

that's not right. when moving it should take steady 1-arm pressure.

jack up the front.. might be very worn spindle bushings causing the binding.

could be crunchy dry bearings and no lube in the steering box too.

post back.

ford manual boxes and steering are EZ to correct.

You were absolutely correct , the steering box was dry. It still does not have power steering but it is much better.
Now to figure out how to keep the front tires steering with a heavy attachment on the rear. I will try weight on the front.

hang a bumper on it and hang weight from the bumper.

even the 75-90$ repop bumpers weight about 50-75#, and have bars to make it easy to hang suitcase weights on, or barbell weights using some backing plates and carriage bolts.

or cast some concrete weights . i did so for my ford 4600.. made 4 3/4 round 'cheese wheel' weights for my front bumper.
