Do not attempt to turn the engine over. Pull all plugs, add a tablespoon or so of ATF or MMO in each cylinder. Pull both valve covers & soak everything w/ MMO or ATF. Remove the 15/16 hex nut to the right of the water pump. (the big nut in the picture) This is where your oil gallery is for the valves/lifters is. Don't lose the little spring under the nut. Use an oil squirt can to put about a cup of oil in here. Replace the spring & nut. Then, start looking for mouse/hornet nests in places like the tail pipe & carb breather hose. Wait at least 2 or 3 days before you do anything, then try & hand crank the engine. (w/o spark plugs) If it does not turn by hand, repeat everything you just did, ie, more MMO or ATF. If it still won’t turn by hand, remove the starter (see tip # 36) and use a BF screwdriver or jack handle on the ring gear teeth to try & turn it over. Once you get it to turn by hand, then change all the fluids (check tips 3 & 4 at the link below for info on the tranny/pump/rear end fluid change) Fluids include oil & filter, oil in the air cleaner, and 50/50 water & antifreeze. Grease all fittings. Replace the points, plugs, condenser, rotor & cap. If the wires are cracked & frayed, replace them as well, or you will spend days trying to find that one short. Clean all connections bright & shiny. Remove the fuel line at the carb & turn the gas on; drain out whatever is in the tank into a bucket. Clean the fuel screens in the carb & sediment bowl. Spray the carb good w/ carb cleaner. (Some people can get a carb to work like this after setting for years. Some people win the lottery. I have never got away w/ an old carb working; plan on a rebuild). Add at least two gallons of fresh gas & make sure you have a good flow by removing the bolt at the bottom of the carb. Keep some starting fluid handy. It will need a battery in it to turn the engine over & fire the plugs. If you need to jump it, see tip # 43. Remember, you filled the cylinders w/ oil, so it will smoke a lot when it gets going. Once you get it running, just let it idle for a 1/2 hour or so. Good luck & check back!

Ditto what bruce said.

I make my own juice from atf, diesel, mineral spirits and naptha for general rust busting.. for an engine. I just use the diesel and atf.. add to all the places trhat bruce mentioned.. and oil inthe relif plug.. if it's gonna break loose it should do so after a couple days of the soaking we've mentioned.. take it slow.. banging on it with the starter is good bor busting rings.. etc.

post back after the soak and hand crank attempt.

Good advice below. But I always add half a cup or so of oil to each cyl through the spark plug oil.
Some guys here say ATF is good enough. They are probably right. But I still secretly believe that MMO works better.
Put the oil in and let it sit for a few days then put it in high gear and try rocking the rear wheels back and forth. I've got one here that has been soaking all winter. Hoping to get it freed up and running again this spring so I can sell it. Too cold to mess with it now.

Well if I had it I would use only one thing but I also buy a lot of tractors that are locked up. Fill the cylinders with ATF, yep fill them as full as they can be. Doing that does a few things. Get it every where it needs to be plus gets t to the valves and there will be at least 2 valves sitting open. As for MMO and ATF they are pretty much the same stuff other then MMO smells prettier. I have done this with 20 plus tractors and so far only 3 or 4 have not popped free for me. Let it sit a month, do not get in a hurry it sure didn't get in a hurry when it locked up. Then after a month pull the plugs. It the cylinders are still full wait longer if they seem to have gone down then set a 12 volt battery in with the plugs out and use short fast taps on the starter button if she spins over good if not wait some more

The last 8N motor I worked on was siezed on the camshaft.MMO loosened all the carbon deposits in the top end but the motor didn't free up till I removed the gear on the cam. the P.O. must have run it needing to prime oil pump.

thanks to all who gave their advice.I have not got the 8n yet,but I"ll let you know monday evening.Bruce,it sounds like yours is the most comprehensive way to go about it,so I"ll be taking your advice thanks ,cw
