8N Thermostat Replacement

[JACKSTRAP]

I'm in the process of replacing the thermostat in my 8N.
When I removed the old upper hose there was no thermostat there.
Any suggestions as to how the new thermostat gets inserted into the new hose?
Pointed end toward the engine block at the block end of the hose?
Pointed end toward the radiator at the radiator end of the hose?
Any advise will be appreciated!

Those thermostats have varied in style over the years.

The ones from "back in the day" used a coiled bimetallic spring as the heat sensing element, the units of today use a "wax pellet" sealed inside a copper or brass-colored housing.

In either case, the heat sensing element goes toward the HEAT, which is the cylinder head.

Hold one end in a pan of boiling water and watch what happens. if nothing happens hold the other end in the boiling water. you shoud see the thernostat opening and figure out which end goes toward the heat,

Go back & re-read the advice. What Bob & Elmer & I are saying is not contradictory.

Put the pointy end toward the radiator & that puts the heat sensing element toward the block.

I have come to the conclusion that some people should not own tractors or tools.I have been putting thermostats since the mid 50s and always knew which end is up.

Thermostat should be inserted approx.four inches inside the rear end of the upper radiator hose, where it connects to the engine head,with the pointed end of the thermostat pointing toward the radiator.WD40 helps. don

My thermostat is a small round brass lookin' thing with a butterfly valve in the top. No pointy end at all.

It is clearly marked on the side which way to radiator. Complete with arrow.

Maybe you should scrounge one of these.
