working on a front mount distributor 8N, replaced the wires they were very old and arcing through the wires. Replaced the spark plugs, they had been in the tractor for several years. The problem I am having is the # 4 plug is arcing outside at the base of the wire where it sits on the plug. I wires are in the distributor correctly. Some times plug 2 & 3 will arc the same as #4. Looking for some help. Thanks

Slip the boots off of the sparkplug wires and set them aside (working some silicone lube spray between the boots and the wires will make this easier) and run the engine and note what happens with the arcing (better or worse).

I would remove the plugs and check closely for a crack in the porcelain near the metal section of the plug. By closely I mean to the point of using a magnifying glass. If you find some cracks and you used a socket to install the plugs I would suggest not to use that socket to reinstall the new ones. Just tighten them with a box end wrench. Something in the socket is applying force to the contact tip or the porcelain insulator breaking them. Or the plugs may have been damaged by being dropped.
