930 Primer pump

Hi:

Ran out of fuel the other day. After filling the tank I went to use the primer pump to fill the filters and found that the pump was not pumping. Can these be rebuild/repaired. I am guessing that there is a plunger or o ring inside but cannot see a way of dismantling the pump.

It took a long time for gravity fill the first filter but I could not get gravity to fill the second filter, even after I loosed the release valve as per the manual. I found in the archives a post on how the poster removed the release valve and then the second filter slowllllly filed. Is there a reason why the manual instruction do not work? Book says to loosen the pressure release cap 2 and a half turns.

Finally on to the third filter. This one I could not get to fill by gravity. I disconnected the line from the filter head and cranked the engine over. I notice that the transfer pump put out very little pressure. Is that normal? That is the fuel would come out the opening, like 1/8 of an inch. There was no pressure, so I hooked up a rubber hose to the third filter and used a funnel to fill the third filter. Tada, back in business.

Sorry for the long post, but I would like to know if the above is normal or if I should be doing some preventative repairs.

Thanks for your thoughts.

PS:

Fuel filter is for late model unit with built-in relief valve.

primer pumps are replaceble and the new style does not screw but you just pump it up works much better than the old style, last ones I got were around the $ 50.00 mark, in a pinch you can carefully put air to the fuel tank and bleed the system too cnt

Would first disconect line to primer or better yet remove primer an make sure there is no dirt pluging line at primer.

I added an electric fuel pump under the tank, solves this problem as well as the bad lift pump issues. I put it on seperate fused toggle switch, about the same price of new primer pump

The old primer pumps can not be rebuilt to my knowledge.

The old part number is A23865, new part number is A60042, and Mesick’s dot com sells them for $250.

This is what I would do if I were in your shoes.

First; one poster made the suggestion of removing the pump and making sure there is nothing plugging the pump or line. I suggest that as well, a dead June bug somehow got into my fuel line and I played Heck getting that figured out. It doesn’t take very much to plug off the primer pump hole.

Second if the primer pump doesn’t work get a oil can with a flexible spout preferably a 1 quart oil can, fill it with diesel, unscrew the bleeder screws in all filters and start pump diesel into the bleeder hole in the first filter.

(Hold spout end into the bleeder hole. I have actually put an o-ring on the oil can spout tip to help hold the pressure)

When diesel starts coming out off the number 2 filter bleeder hole, tighten the bleeder screw and continue until diesel comes out of the final stage filter, when that happens tighten the screw in both the final stage and first stage filters.

You should be good to go unless you need to bleed the injection lines.

Hi all:

Sound like the situation I described is very normal for these tractors. I gather from the comments that since the tractor is running I need not worry about doing anything except try not to run out of fuel again.

Case Nutty 1660:

Your price on primer pump greatly differs from brokengun. Care to share your source?

chess:

I did not mention it in my original post but I did disconnect the fuel line after the primer pump and there was a full flow of fuel from the line. So, I do not think there is any obstructions in the line.

DC3Z:

How much pressure is your electric fuel pump putting out. Given the cost of the primer pump is more than electric pumps then as long as the system can handle the pressure that should be a future option.

brokengun:

I like your oil can idea. Way cheaper then primer pump or electric pump. Although Case Nutty 1660 suggestion to put air into the tank is even less expensive.

Thanks all for your comments.

My electric fuel pump puts out a max of 3 1/2 lbs i am more interested in volume than pressure (25 gph) any unused fuel goes back thru return line

called my Case dealer today and remembered the primer pump, their list price is 30.00, this is just the primer pump and not the supply pump with primer as I am guessing the other poster maybey was referring to cnt
