930 solenoid

Hi,
I have a new solenoid to suit a 900/930 but no books or wiring diagrams to read. It has 4 terminals (2 heavy for the starter leads) and 2 light terminals marked R and S. I assume also that it will be negative earthed? Seems like a dumb question to me but what do R and S mean?
Sorry I'm more used to crank handles, blow lamps and starting papers than working with this electrical stuff!
Thank you
Andrew

Andrew, hope you got the answer you were after. Someone told me the "R" was for the wire that goes thru the resistor. I don't know if this is true but it does work that way. On my 830 it is a white wire that goes thru the resitor. There needs to also be another white wire from this terminal to the plus side of the distributor. On mine the manual shows (however it is not very clear) the "s" terminal to be the yellow wire to the "Start" side of the key switch. This leaves only the red wire to the Hot side of the key switch and it goes to the Center big terminal, along with the pos side of the battery.

If it seems confusing, it was to me too. Out of all the diagrams, pictures, manuals I looked at the easiest for me was the sketch from our own
Loren, the Adirondack case guy. I don't know how to reproduce it here, but it's on this forum from 2-20-2013 on the post entitled "charging system on my 830". Saved my life...slim

Thanks...sorry yes it"s for diesel. Ok I"ve got this 930 solenoid to fit onto a 500 diesel with an Autolite starter. I want to use it just like a conventional solenoid. The parts guy here couldn"t find anything else to suit. I just don"t want to damage it! I"m thinking ignition wire to R and start wire to S...
Thanks for your help

If you check the R terminal with an ohmeter and it shows infinity (open circuit) then you will know for sure it is intended for use on a gasoline engine to bypass the external ignition resistor during cranking and not used in diesel application.
