9600 PTO shaft stuck

I have a 9600 ford that I can"t get the 1000 RPM PTO shaft out of to put in the 540. Took the retaining ring out and it will move in and out about 1/8 inch. I tried to yank it out with a slide hammer but did not have any luck. Anyone got any ides about what it might be catching on. Thanks for your help.

The splines on the shaft or one of the gears are probably galled. Or the needle bearing at the front of the shaft is giving problems. You are just going to get enough force on it to pull it out. There's no graceful way around it.

The neighbor had one stuck like that in his 9700. We put on an old PTO shaft and had to hammer it out.

Make sure you check your PTO oil level twice a year. It is a separate reservoir from the rear end. There is a NPT plug on the left side looking from the rear. That is the fill level. There is a drain on the bottom PTO cover plate. Use hydraulic oil. We turned in a street L which helps in filling.

this sound tricky but i had to weld a nut to end of the shaft and screw a slide hammer on. if i hadnt done that dont think i would ve gotten it out, it takes lots of outward force. But trust me it works you can cut the nut off and grind off the weld.
