966 remotes not working

Hello js, welcome to YT! Only the remotes, or steering, brakes, 3 point and PTO as well? If all, the live drive spline in the clutch pressure plate stripped out. If only using one set of remotes and only that remote stopped check for one of the hoses not being completely plugged in.

I believe the problem may be in your MCV valve but I am no expert, hopefully someone else will chime in that has some experience with these.
The MCV is a completely separate hydraulic system from the remotes. The MCV only controls the steering, TA and brakes, and has its own pump. The 3pt hitch and the hydraulic remotes have their own system and pump.

First check the obvious/stupid. Did you lower the 3pt hitch and leave the position lever in the extreme forward position? Happened to me the other day. I just blindly grabbed the position control to lower the 3pt so I could remove the bale spear, then jumped on the tractor and could not figure out why the loader would not lift. After a few seconds of scratching my head, and thinking the worst, I remembered that the 3pt was down.

Sorry for the misdirection, barnyard do you have any of these 66 series tractors? Are you sure the position of the 3 point controls and the operation of the remotes have any connection on them? What tractor were you operating in the manner you suggested?

I have multiple 56 and 66 series tractors. The 3pt control is all the same from the 06 through the 66 series.

When you push the position control lever past the "all the way down" point, you go into an area labeled "RUN" on the quadrant. I believe it controls the response speed of the draft control, but it also bypasses the hydraulic pressure to the remotes. You either get very slow response, or no response at all from the remotes if you mistakenly leave the 3pt position control in RUN.

Hmmm…thanks! The 656 must have been the odd man out on this. That is the one I had the most experience with. I don’t recall it having that position. Maybe that stop knob was set not to allow the lever to go down that far and I never paid attention to it. Been about 40 plus years ago now, probably wasn’t even 10 when I first started running it. We had a 3 point blade on it with a hydraulic angle and I don’t remember the remotes being disabled by that position control lever. I know it is apples and oranges but we got a 65 Massey a bit after the 656, it’s 3 point and remotes had some very different interactions compared to the IH.

A little more info would help from original post. Still hasn't said if power steering works, pto, and hitch. If all works, then try hitch with a load on it. A gauge in the outlets would help to steer us in the right direction. Possible causes, oil, filter, relief valve, position control handle as stated, suction tube to the pump from the filter, pump, pump flange oring, internal leakage. All of these will also affect the three point hitch. You can remove the third link cover from the rear end and let us know if you have a large internal leak. With engine running you will see oil coming down on the right side of the differential housing. This is nornal , it is the return oil with hydraulics in neutral. With a helper have them pull a valve on demand and watch if there is a large leak from somewhere else.

Yeah, the 656/666/686 3pt is slightly different and does not have that "feature."

Well like MR Fred asked what does work and what doesn't. If no steering PTO or Brakes it is probably the spline in the back of the pressure plate if there are brakes steering and PTO then all is not so bad. check filter and if just changed look and see that the short pipe between the pump and filter is in there and sealed also that the filter is in with the screen in front of it next to the cover and not the otherway around . IF this is all good and still not joy I would pull the pump the pentagon looking cover on the left side of the tractor and see if the nut came off the shaft with the gear. I had that happen once on an 806 same set up. You will need to drain the oil for this. Pump will come out with the cover and if nut came off the gear and nut should be laying right there under where the pump would be. Once these are checked out get back to us with the results if not fixed by now. And yup the whole lot of those 06-66 series in the larger models like barnyard explained are the same with the 2 pumps for each operation. PTO has it's own pump and is another reason for the needing to know if he has PTO ,steering and brakes. IF any one of those works tells us if the spline is shot or not and what to look for. On the spline if you remove the cover under the clutch and look with a light up in there you can see if the outside splint piece is turning while running and dam sure don't stick anything in there while running it would not be a good day if you did.
