990 David Brown

I am looking at 990 David Brown what can you tell me about this tractor ? selectamatic is this like the caseamatic Tran. Thank You Marty

Romeos, The Selectamatic and Implematic had to do with the type 3 point hitch installed rather than the drive arrangement. The DB tractors were a tractor you either loved or hated, the diesels were extremely fuel effecient, they had a 3 main bearing engine when state of the art would have been 5 for a 4 cyl diesel The clutches are complicated and very expensive to repair and the hydraulics systems were suceptible to sludging up severly unless fluids and filters were changed occasionally. One in good condition and properly cared for can be a excellent tractor. mEl

I own one, great tractor as far as economy, power, ease of handling is good. I got mine cheap as it had been in a fire. Be prepared for the English style of engineering- IOW everything is 2x as complex as it needs to be.

Can't say about the 990, but I have an 880 and it runs great, starts in all but the coldest weather, and is VERY easy on fuel. Every other thing said is true also. Does the 990 you're looking at have the full hydraulic steering?

I have a david brown 990. It is not a bad tractor if it is in excellant condition but other wise can be a money pit. Mine is. For instance the hydraulic oil always gets water in it, Every david brown I have seen is always covered in oil from leaks and when your front steering gets sloppy you replace spindle and steering arms at around 1000 dollars.

One of the biggest causes of hydraulic problems on a David Brown is water. The biggest cause of water in the hydraulics is bad shift boots on the gear shift levers.

They are good tractors. Know of one that has over 8000 hours, head and pan have never been off the motor.
