9n Dummy Coil

A friend of mine is looking for a parts supplier for 8/9n"s that can supply a Dummy coil for his 9n that he is changing over to 12 volt.i know there are easier ways to do this but this is how he wants to do it.Would any one know of one ?
Thanks
Chuck

Why a dummy coil? Buy the 12 volt replacement, take the generator to a dependable shop, convert it to 12 volts, voila!!!! Looks original, except for battery and its under hood,

Thanks for the reply . i agree with you but thats what he wants to do so i told him i would try and find him a dummy coil as i have been told there is such a thing somewhere on the market.
Thanks again
Chuck

I believe one of the electronic ignition manufacturers makes a blank cap that allows you to use a round coil with their conversion.. i have no idea if they sell it seperately.

Most of us just take an old square coil and hog them out and solder the connects up as we need them.. ( some of us make them outta a wood block too! )

I pulled the pins on mine hollowed it out and used a section of plug wire to connect the two ends together. I now use a 40,000-volt round can 12-volt coil, which could be mounted out of sight, but mine is in plain view. This is on a 2N and has been working fine with no cleaning or adjusting of any ignition parts for over 5 years now.

Chuck........I don't care what yer friend thinks or says, AIN'T NO SUCH THING!!!

There are real 12v squarecan frontmount 2.5-ohm coils that require the "infamous ballast resistor". This is my recommendation for 12-volt conversions.

OR....there are conversion schemes where the gutts of enny squarecan frontmount ignition coil are "removed" and a real 12-volt roundcan coil are "scabbed" into the squarecan coil shell. This is a semi-successfull farmerized conversion only for successfull tinkers. I suppose you could call this a "dummy coil". I don't recommend this.

Or......you can use the OEM 6-volt squarecan coil and mandatory "infamous ballast resistor" plus a 12-to-6 volt conversion resistor of about 2.5-ohms 50watts.

But there ain't no such thing as a "dummy" coil except the insister.........respectfully, Dell

A 12-volt advocate for the right reasons, who knows how to do it right the first time.

Pertonix makes them, and sells them as part of a kit consisting of an ignition module, the "dummy" square-can coil, and a new rond-can coil.

I DO NOT know if they will sell just the dummy coil.

Try giving them a call for a part number, and a reseller near you.

May not be a commercial 'dummy coil', but as was pointed out by BOB, Pertronix does make an electronic ignition kit # 1247XT which uses their block off plate (where the square coil usually sits). It does however utilize their special distributor cap (see attached instruction sheet). As Bob said, I too don't know if they sell just these parts. One would think so, in the interest of those customers who have purchased their kits & need replacement parts.
As souNdguy said, some have made their own out of wood (or masonite). I've hogged out two coils, the really old one was easy, as the potting material was old, cracked, brittle, shrunken, and that came out nice. The next was of much more recent manufacture (good fresh epoxy)& it was a real bogger! But being the persistent person that I am, I didn't let it beat me and got 'er done ..in time, too much time. Good thing I'm retired! End result looks nice and works nice. Don't want to start any controversy here with the "originalist", and I know square can coils can be made to work just fine for decades(long enough)when everything is done correctly (key word), 'but', as they say, the round can filled with heat conducting oil vs sq can with insulating epoxy is more forgiving as the heat gets out better and there is no contracting/expanding epoxy to tug at the wires, insulation, connections, etc.
To each his own, live & let live!
P.S. I tried to attach 3 photos as well as this link. http://www.ytmag.com/store/product_files/1247XT_4945.htm
If they don't all make it I may thy 2 more posts with them.

I'll figure it out! Sooner or later, dog gone it!

Thanks everyone for your help . I"ll pass the info on to my buddy.I"m sure he will be able to get it geared up.
Thanks again

Pertronix makes a "dummy coil" #1247XTCAP for $27.95. This site has them but you need to call to order, they are not listed on the site.

Another often overlooked benifit to conversion to the round can coil is the polarity will be correct now for 12V neg. grd w/more optimal coil output. Probably not the true case for any version of the square can coil. JMHO Jim.

I'm just wondering, why is he converting it anyways? Are there bad parts like the generator and such? I'm not saying this applies to you or your friend, but some people convert tractors to 12 volt for no logical reason. Anyways, tell him to go with the 12 volt square coil if he has to convert it.
