%@#%$^ 9n ford

got a 9n ford, had the carb rebuilt, new points, was running good. was pushing snow and it back fired, started running like crap. stalled wouldn"t start, got all kinds of gas and spark. any input would be deeply appreciated

Water or moisture in the distriubutor cap or water in the gas. Wipe out the cap, drain the gas/water out of the carburetor.

know I don't now a lot about fixing and what not (thats why I like this site so i can learn) but it could be the fule pump dad had a 350 that did that it kinda worked then it would go hog wild.

turn the gas off, drain the bottom of the carb.re-install the plug. with all this snow could be water. turn on gas and try it. If not check spark, coil may have died. i will be here for the next hour.

Most tractors don't have fuel pumps on them and a 9N doesn't for sure. 99% of tractor use a gravity flow fuel system unless there diesel. Just helping you learn a little more. By the way I'm also in Missouri

drained gas tank,it's clean, took cap off cleaned,no water, checked points are good, got gas, spark still won't fire

With that front mount distributor the N series fords where real bad about getting the cap etc. wet and causing that problem. Also could be a few other things like the ignition switch is going bad, points slipped, or a clogged up fuel system/filters

Triple,

A 9N Ford, with it's "front-mount distributor" can't "get out of time" unless something seriously BREAKS, as the distributor is driven off of the front of the camshaft by an offset "tang".

Stan, Hoiw much gas is in it? I know this sounds crazy but try anyway. We found if there is less than an inch of gas in it it wont start. put an extra 5 gal in it. i know its gravity fed, and you got gas, but sometimes it needs the fuel pressure.

If it was running, pushing snow at the time, may have broken a valve or may have warped it. Compression test will tell you if it did.

Come on fellows... Quote " was pushing snow and it back fired, started running like crap. "
Any old farmer knows that he got the ingition wet.
Solution is obvious. Dry it out.

check the drive key on the distributer, sometime they break,
also saw a cam shaft break, cause simular problem,
check timing by pulling #1 plug bring to tdc on compresion stroke, rotor in the distributer should line up with #1 on the cap
check cam by removing valve cover and checking rocker movement

i've put my hand over the air intake side of the carb and it's not blowing back, just sucks on my hand

I had the same problem with my AC D14...most of my chores around my place required the engine to be worked at barely above idle...check the basics, start at your spark plugs, then wires, then cap, rotor or points...my problem was a spark plug would often "foul" from the light work load on the engine...I fixed the problem by going to a "hotter" heat range spark plug. Hope this info is some help to your problem.

Only way it could be timing on a 9N is if the cam gear broke. Take off the distributor cap and then with help from some one watch to see if the rotor turns when the engine is turned over. If it turns then theres no way it could be timing because of the way the distributor is driven. A back firs could be caused by a carb problem and the main jet might be clogged and causing a lean condition which will make an engine back fire

There is other stuff, but it was running,so if the cap is dry,MAYBE the condenser in the distributor is no good,MAYBE the coil is no good.A way to check a coil is if its hot, right after the motor dies, its bad,or maybe hooked up wrong.
While motors can and do break stuff and get out of time, its more likely that its water in the carb, that maybe you can drain out,or its moisture inside the cap(pushing snow, front mount distributor, fan blowing moisture around maybe?)or moisture out side the cap(you can spray WD 40 on it and it will displace the water, but you still need to wipe it off somehow with a rag or paper towel, and it can look ok and still be wet the water gets up under the boots on the wires on the cap and shorts them out)and you can spray WD 40 inside the cap,or ether, but let it air out good, cause ether can explode. You could take the cap off and inside and see if it runs after you get it good and dry.
You can take out number 1 spark plug, turn the motor with a wrench untill number 1 piston is all the way up,and the rotor should be pointing to number 1 on the cap,or halfway out,EITHER way tells you that its probly not out of time.
Water or snow being blown around by the fan could have shorted out your ignition switch, the switch may be bad.The water could have shorted out a wire(possibly going to the voltage regulator or coil that grounded it out).
My best guess is that your carburetor is full of water, and that its enough that it killed the motor, but you dont necessarily see any water because most of it is in the carburetor.
I could be wrong, but its well worth your time to drain whats in the carb and se if it fixes it.

Calm down. Cap and points are dry, gas is good, getting gas. Try points condensor. Was working in a distributor that had seperate points and condensor, points were bad so I replaced. Thing is, parts guy only had "uniset" where points and condensor were one piece, so had to replace points and condensor. The condensor on the brand new "uniset" was bad out of the box, and back fired, and you name it, but would not run. As a last ditch effort after pulling lots of hair out, I put back in the old points and condensor, and it ran...rough like before I replaced it, but it ran. I took back "uniset", got another, ran perfect. Condensors can go bad.

Could of course be something else, but...condensors can and do go bad and is one of the cheaper easier parts to try.

I had one and it and it pulled that stunt often. I think it was designed to do that by Henry Ford. I sold it to a guy who was smitten with the cute factor who didn't know what evil lurked therein. I suggest you do the same.

How did you check for spark? Sometimes a bad condenser will work just good enough to allow a spark when the points are flicked open and shut by hand but will not be good enough to allow a spark when the engine is cranked over fast. Bad point contacts can do the same thing. Jim

Since I don't know much yet my advice might not be worth much, so backup the salt truck!
I had two spark plugs fail on me for no reason that I could figure, It made me go around in circles for a while, 'cuase every time I would take the spark plugs out to test them, they'd test good! I thought I had found the problem when I sprayed water on the wires and saw sparks. I replaced them and no change, but until I had it running (barely) and pulled two wires and it ran the same, I figured out that those two plugs were dead.
Could all of them go like that at once? I have no idea! But if you do get new plugs and they don't make a difference, just set them aside for "next time"
Hope this helps!

Try using lead additive in the gas. Those 8+9N engines don't like unleaded gas. They get hot and the valves stick. Or you can put automatic trans fluid in the gas.

just north of st charles county and just south of pike. how does the gravity flow fuel system work? you say diesels don't use the gravity flow fuel system how does theirs flow?
Thanks.

9N has 3 gas filters. All are necessary. Think one is in tank, one in line, and one in carb elbow. Nother thing points may have moved, think its an 8-32 screw that sometimes is too long and can't tighten or shorts out. Any of them new plugs get fouled. Just a start. Good luck

Gravity flow system is like on a lawn mower so the tank sits higher then the carb and that is all that pushes gas into the carb. But on a diesel it has a fuel pump like on a car or truck to push fuel to the injector pump which then increases the pressure a lot more. Shoot and injector pump on a diesel will push fuel so hard if your hands in the way it will shoot it in one side and out the other side and you will loose that hand because of it

i took the carb off last night and cleaned it totally, everythink that would turn or had a hole got cleaned, took the radiator off and checked everything from cap to gear. everything looks good. putting it back together tonight. will see if it will work

got it running last night, did everything everyone suggested plus.so it's running great. THANKS EVERYONE
