9n Front mount Timing Problem

Hello Friends, Its me again with a stupid question. I have tried timing my distributor on my 9n front mount. When I set the 1/4 on the wide side of the shaft and putting my finger on spark plug 1 hole to get TDC. But when I try to installed the distributor the shaft is backward and won't fit. I know I am doing something wrong, but I am lost. I even have a manual but I can't understand what I am doing wrong or what I am not doing. Any help would be great

You are confusing timing on a sidemount w/ timing on a frontmount.

Forget about finding TDC on #1. The distributor doesn't care.

What manual are you using? If it's the I&T FO4 manual, use paragraph 87. The I&T FO4 manual has instructions & pictures. I would have never understood the instructions w/o the pics.

What it doesn't tell you is to set the point gap before you set the timing. Also, don't rely on your eyes to tell you when the "points begin to open". Use a test light or meter. When the light goes out or the meter deflects, that's when they begin to open.

Rotate the shaft by the tang, NOT the rotor. If you rotate it by the rotor, you could cause the advance mechanism to kick in. Make sure you are using the correct mounting hole, the wide shaft of the tang & rotate it in the correct direction.

When you're done, just put the distributor back on the tractor. It has an offset tang & will only go back on one way.....unless you really force it; then, it will break. That mistake will cost you $85.

Post back w/ results & any other questions.

Forget about tdc. With a front mounted distributor, it can only fit one way and should be in perfect time. Make sure the slot is lined up correctly in the crankshaft . With your finger on # 1 spark plug hole you are likely getting tdc on the exhaust stroke which is causing your problem. Good luck. Jim QC

The 1/4 inch may not even get you close if there is wear in the cam shaft dis. drive slot. I have seen several N tractors with front mount dis that have the timing slot extended. To make up for wear in the gears, dis, cam, ect.

ditto what bruce said.. especially about the meter or test lamp to tell when points open.. at .015.. there ain't much to eye up..

This was your advice to him on 3/19. That is why he is trying to find TDC on #1. Please tell us how finding TDC on #1 has anything to do with setting the timing on a frontmount.

Re: Front Mount Distributor Help in reply to MasserD, 03-19-2009 13:16:10
check to see if rotor is pointed at #1 wire on dist. cap when #1 piston is at tdc,if not losin timing plate lock screw & adjust dist. so cap&rotor line up

While I was putting my distributor cap on, I looked in the cap while it was snap on, the rotor was not contacting one of the posts in the distributor cap that I could see, maybe more posts are not touching. Have you heard of this problem before? After looking closer at the cap you could see the ware on two posts and the other two posts had no ware. I don't know.

The rotor should not touch the posts, only get a close spark gap on them.
