9n-Fuel Issue

OK Guys,
I have been watching this list for quite some time and now I need help before I throw good money into bad ideas. This is not my 9N but I have been keeping it. I shredded my pasture several weeks ago and parked tractor, Then I needed to trim up some and started the tractor, let it warm and then when I placed into gear and hit PTO it died when I pulled out. It will fire over with no problem with starting fluid, it will only continue to run with fuel from squirt can directly into carb. As soon as I stop feeding fuel-engines dies out, now early shadetree mechanic procedure tells me its fuel delivery--kinda took carb apart, cleaned put back together still same. I do have unbelieveable suction into carb when running--do I need a new carb???? I dont mind buying one but if I am missing something I would really like to know..thanks in advance

There are three fuel screens. You should check them all. In the fuel tank on top of the shutoff valve. Fuel strainer on top of the sediment bowl. And in the intake el on the carb.
Looks like one of those is clogged. (You did open the fuel shutoff?) You can pull the plug in the bottom of the carb to see iffn you get a good flow. You might also have a stuck float valve.

Like Roger sez, it's probably a fuel delivery problem. What that means is that you check fuel first, but do not rule out a spark problem.

Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb & turn the fuel on at the sediment bowl. You should get a good steady stream as long as the fuel is turned on. If not, the N has three fuel screens; one in the brass elbow, one in the top of the sediment bowl & one on the stem of the sediment bowl in the gas tank. All three probably need to be cleaned. If you have the fuel knob turned on all the way, it may be trying to feed off of the reserve inlet which is probably clogged. Put at least 2 gallons in the tank. Factory specs on carb settings are 1 turn out; I use one turn out on the idle but 1 1/2 turns on the main jet.

As the others have said, check these 3 screens for dirt and debrie. Here is a pic. for ya. Save it to your computer for future ref.

The tractor doesnt have a sediment bowl. only has a fuel shut off(vehicle type)valve. I am kinda scared to think what else has been modified without thought of keeping it original

If your N does not have a sed. bowl and screen, I would get rid of what ever valve that is there and replace it with the proper shut off and sed. bowl. The one that is supposed to be there, has a screen up inside the tank to collect debrie from getting into your fuel line and carb.
You can buy the right one from this site or any parts site you choose.

really some good ideas so far and I appreciate it and hope to see a few more----I love more options---if I didnt have bad luck, wouldnt have any so I have to gain ground any way possible..

thanks again

Not sure if this fits this discussion, but my 9N begins to run lean after about 10 minutes of hoggin. I can smooth her out with a partial pull of the coke but this should not be.....carb adjustments don't seem to do anything, either way. I put in new cylinder sleeves, pistions, rings, and valves last year. I also have a 12v. conversion kit installed. Do I need different plugs with the 12v. conversion? fuel flow when shut down is good at carb.
