I just bought this 9N and don"t know much about a 9N does the PTO have to be engaged for the hydraulic pump to work ?
The 3 point won"t work at all and I removed the top lift cover, PTO shaft, and pump. I couldn"t find anything wrong with the piston or pump so I cleaned everything and put it all back together and it still don"t work. I looked in the side hole while trying to get the pump to work and it didn"t pump until I engaged the PTO is that normal? Should I remove the pump and rebuild it or could it be something else.

Yes, the PTO has to be engaged for the hydraulics to work.
Did ya notice when ya had it all apart how the PTO shaft ran right through the hydraulic pump and rotated the cam that moved the pistons back and forth?

Thats why it works that way.

Hey Donald.. time to buy a service manual, parts manual, and a master parets catalog.

it would have saved you hours of work and expense of you fixing your non-broke tractor.

As the others have said... the pto needs to run to make the hyd pump operate.

I suggest getting the manuals before you take any other parts of the tractor apart to fix them.. just in case they are working fine and don't actually need fixing.

shop service manual or I&T fo-4 is a decent manual.. sold everwhere.. ( here I believe as well ).
