9N - kids playground

The owner of the Montessori school both my kids went to has had this tractor in her back yard for many years. I actually never really took a good look at it but the other day she said it might be nice to get it going again to use on her property. The tractor has been sitting outside for many years and basically has been a plaything for her grandchildren.
today I went over and had a look.
It is a 9N with a small emblem on the front which says 'Fergeson System'
It still has oil in the engine and the transmission. I was able to depress the clutch and move the gears but, was not able to turn the engine over by trying to move the fan belt. After all these years should I assume the engine has frozen up and would have to remove starter motor and try to turn the engine over via the flywheel? There was some gas in the tank but it smelt like varnish and there was even a stalagtite of brown goo hanging from the glass fuel bowl under the fuel tank!
Other than that it is all there - however I have a feeling it might be more expensive to get it running again than the tractor is actually worth?

Sounds like it could go either way - Need to do a little more checking. Although you could be right. Ford N tractors aren't selling for much money right now.

I'd pull the plugs and dump in some ATF - Let it soak for a week or so and then try to see if it turns over.

Might be a parts tractor or if the engine fires up, it may be in better shape than it appears. One thing to ascertain is "How much would she be willing to put into getting it back on its feet"

Sitting for a long time......notorious for frozed clutchplate unless clutch pedal was stowed in the proper position.

I agree with Dollarbill. Put some ATF or MMO down the spark plug holes and let it sit for a week. Then try to turn it over. If you can get it to turn over then pull the carb and clean it.
Give it some clean fuel - even if you have to add a small tank. An old tractor will almost Always run one more time.
Depending on if it will run and what condition the tires, etc are in it may be worth more where it is for kids to play on.

ditto what the others said.. 3$ of atf in the cyls, clean the plugs with some sand paper.. pull some paper thru the points,, bring a 12v battery and jump cables.. adn a 1 pint fuel tank and hose fittings.

might fire to life..

OK will take some pictures today and post as well - forgot to look to see if the distributor was still there - I will ask her what she wants to do.

If you manage to get the engine to turn over by hand it may worth a gamble to put clean oil in the crankcase and prime the oil pump before actually starting it. I drained the oil from my 2N when I first got it and it had some water and a lot of dirt that settled to the bottom of the crankcase. Also make sure the clutch will separate from the transmission so you don't sludge up the gears and hydraulics with the old oil in that end.

Have kids? Nieces and nephews? If it is all there, and you have kids that would be interested, it would make for a good project to not only learn from but the chance to spend quality time while you are still able. I have a niece in jr high that is interested in learning about machinery, and anything else I would be able to teach. I have a mower buried in the shed that I am going to dig out for us to work on. It hasn't seen the light of day for close to 30 years. Am I going to get more into it than it would truly be worth? Pretty much assured. Am I going to worry about it? Not in the least. I am more focused on the true benefit involved here. She will get to learn something useful which she won't forget and I will have the benefit of being able to spend the time with her. Time is far more precious than money. Just something else to consider.

Iam 16 and just finished a fencerow 9n ford. You will probably put more into then its worth but thats part of a hobby.
Not being able to turn the engine from the front doesnt mean the engines locked up, mine was the same way till i put a fresh battery in thenit turned over fine. Got mine going in about 6 weeks of on and off weekends. Very simple to get going agian.
