9N or 2N and what year

I've done the search and know where to find the serial number. I have done everything the posts on the subject have said to do, but I can not see any numbers or even a hint or a trace of a number. The only thing I can find is a Ford Motor Co plate on the dash above the steering wheel (three spokes) with a list of patent numbers. Below the starter, there is the number 848 and below it, 8N and below that, the capital letter "D." I'm thinking it is a 40's model since it has the "I" beam style radius rod, single crease fender, right and left brake are different. The engine has freeze plugs. So, bottom line, can anyone tell me if the 848 and 8N D might give a clue to model or year?
Thanks for any insight.

If its an N series tractor the serial number is about center of the engine just below the head. Should start with 8N if its an 8N and 9N if a 2N or 9N. Now if the engine was replaced at some time you may not have any numbers there but if you have the numbers thats where they are or should be

left side of engine. middle near the top of the side. that is where you will find the serial number.

under the tractor in the rear are casting numbers also. many engines have been swapped around so the engine s.n. may not be correct

Jack........don't be so sphincterly obsessed about your tractor's serial number or year your tractor was manufactured. Parts are interchangeable and retro-refitable. Unless you are creating a "trailer QUEEN" that is going to be displayed at the Ford Motors Museum as an example of "right off the assembly line", yer spinnin' yer wheels. IT DON'T MATTER. And iff'n that's yer goal, then what you got ain't a good candidate for restoration purposes ennyways 'cuz you got an 8N engine in a 9N chassis.........Dell

I seem to remember reading a post on here a while ago that mentioned factory replacement blocks not being numbered. Could have been on another forum, not sure though.
