9N or 2N Fordson

Just purchased a nice running Fordson. Only one problem, I don't quite know which it is, the 9N or 2N. The front grill is vertical so that brings me to 1943, the clutch is on the left, foot pegs, no running board. The distributor is in front. 4 cylinder. 3 forward gears. 2 sets of #s, 9N7006-8 and 9N128950, the 1 looks like an I. It has 6 lugs in back. It has the Ferguson system emblem on front grill. It has hinges on the battery/gas tank cover. Sometimes I think it's a 2N other times a 9N, somewhere in the early 40's. I would appreciate a little light. Thank You.

9N128950 would make it a 1944 2N. The other number you are giving us appear to be a part number, they are oftentimes cast right into the part.

John.........congratulations, you have the "braggin' rights" to a frontmount ignition 1944 Ford-Ferguson 2N. All 2N engines s/n start with 9N. All N-engines are interchangeable, from 1939 thru 1952. But 2N's & 9N's have 3-speed trannys, 8N's have 4-speed trannys. 2N's were mfgrd from mid-1942 starting at 9N99003 thru 9N306*** in 1947. As a general rule, parts are all interchangeable and relative economical. Recommend you squander $25 for a FO-4 manual. It has pictures for the shadetree challenged mechanic. (grin).........Dell

ps......9N-7006 is the tranny casting part number

It also as an I radius and no "breather hole" on the top. Wouldn't this qualify as the 9N? I've spent almost all night just reading all the forum boards, looking at pictures, etc. What else is there to look for in regards to determining what distinquishes between the 9N and 2N? Thanks for any help.

The serial number is best to tell iffn it is a 2N or a 9N but that only tells you about the engine. You could also look for holes at the bottom of your dog legs. If you have the original Ford emblem on the front there will be a little 2N printed on it iffn it is a 2N.
