9N Paint colors

I am new to the forum, so hello everyone. I have a
1940 9N which is all grey. Is this color correct? I
have seen 1940 models red and grey also. Which one
is correct or were they produced with both paint
schemes? The serial number is -9N 216196. Thanks for
helping in advance.

Welcome Tom, I'm fairly new here too, but I have found it to be a wealth of knowledge!
9N's and 2N's were gray. The 8N were the "red belly" tractors.
At least that's what the correct police tell me.
It's your tractor sir. In my opinion, paint it what ever color you like. :)

Thanks Royes. Evidently the ones I saw, which were
pictures on this site, were painted as the owners
wanted. Mine belonged to Daddy and I took it out
yesterday to try and start it after 9-10 years not
being started. I cleaned up the fuel system &
installed new 6v, but no spark. In reading in this
forum have already learned what to check and how to
fix it. The only better way to find this would be to
be able to ask Daddy. Thanks again!

Anytime!
Have some patience Tom, some of the more experienced guys will chime in and give you some more ideas on what to check and do before you fire it up so you don't damage anything after setting that long. (like changing the fluids, and why)
DollarBill, NoNewParts, SoundGuy, Bruce and others gave me good advice recently on one I had just got un-seized, and I'm sure they'll have good input for you.
If you're a little impatient, at least look up what they sent me. Mine's running and working again!

Tom, welcome to the forum. I don't post much, just read and learn. It is a wealth of information and good people. Yer N was born gray but as said, paint it how you want (except green).

Tom........yer 3-speed 9N came from the factory semi-gloss GRAY allover; variously called battleship gray, forest gray, maintenance gray, and mondays gray would not match fridays gray. Today's Ferguson gray is very close to original Ford factory gray. In 1947, Ford changed the paint for the 4-speed 8N to lite gray and red ('cuz it matched the head designers wife's favorite dress, seriously) Many dealers repainted 9N's to look like modern red belly 8N's. Even later they painted them Ford Blue. Its yer tractor, paint it enny color that pleases you. ........Dell, the 20/20 painter......looks good at 20ft or 20mph

Tom, Welcome to the forum. They were originally all gray. Some were painted red and gray because the owners liked that better or to make the tractor seem more modern. The first 3 tractors in this picture are 9Ns; the next is a 2N; then 3 8Ns; and last a 641.

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. As I get deeper into this I m sure I ll have more questions and it s good to know this forum is here for advice, answers and support.

Welcome to the YT site Tom I would suggest making the battery and starter connections clean bright and tight, you may want to pop off the distributor and clean the points you should get spark then also check out Bruce VA 50 tips.
My 1941 9N is Ford Vermillion Red single stage paint and White paint yours any color you want but JD Green LOL
Good Luck

My first forum ever! '39 2N that is a light gray, not the battleship gray. Does anyone know the color? I see it everywhere but no one mentions it. Thank you!

I don't know the specific names for the various shades of gray. But a 1939 is a 9N, not a 2N. 2Ns were first built in 1942.
Yeah I'm not having much luck. It auto corrected me. I saw nine on there as I said it. I actually just confirmed it on Sunday. Went to a Tractor parade basically and these guys that own 10 or 12 of these N's confirmed it as a 39.Thank you!

When i was restoring my 1941 91 tractor i went threw the effort of getting all the color greys suggested on older posts getting samples of all and then finding grey parts on mine that had been protected and never repainted like on the inside of the lift arm caps and found the best gray that i found matched all and was affordable. What i came up with was
(DelFlet Essential ESSS) HS Polyurethane Single Stage PPG industries
Its A MACK COLOR
Brand Code 36120
OEM Code: 36120
