There should be a dip stick on the right side inspection plate.

If not remove the lowest bolt from the inspection cover and fill it till oil runs out.

Check out tips 3 & 4 at the link below regarding the fluid.

One inspection plate has the dip stick & the one on the other side has the PTO lever on it.

Also check out tip # 39. A complete set of manuals will save you a lot of time & money.

While there is an outside chance that low fluid is causing the noise, chances are it's a bearing. Not hard to replace if you have the manuals!

Sit on your tractor. Down by your right heel you should see a round plate bolted to the side of the tranny area. It should have a small dip stick in it and that is what Zane is talking about

I checked it and its right on the money, thanks. The problem is when i use my dirt scoop if i leave the pto turned on while traveling with a load of dirt it makes this loud clicking sound,if i turn the pto offf and travel the load slowly lowers due to a leak in the hydralic valve i believe any ideas what this noise might be from? the avarage load of dirt is about 300-400lbs on average or their abouts and the tractor is supposed to handle 900lbs i believe. Thanks again ?????????? Tony

" any ideas what this noise might be from?"

Yes, I do & told you what I thought it was below. I guess you must have missed it, so here it is again:

While there is an outside chance that low fluid is causing the noise, chances are it's a bearing. Not hard to replace if you have the manuals!

You also have another problem if the load drops. If the arms drop w/ the tractor off or the clutch depressed, chances are you have a worn lift cylinder or piston (or both), a blown top cover gasket or a leaky pressure relief valve. Take the inspection plate w/ the dipstick off. Lift a heavy implement & look inside w/ the tractor running & the PTO engaged to see if you notice oil running from the top cover. If oil is running steadily from the top cover the chances are the lift cylinder needs to be rebuilt. It’s less likely, but a possibility, that the top cover gasket is bad. (It’s very difficult to detect the exact source of the oil leaking inside of the top cover while looking through the inspection port). If no oil is running down from the top cover, look at the rear of the pump in the oil with the load still on it and see if you notice turbulence in the bottom. (Some movement of oil will be normal with the PTO shaft turning). You could have a weak pressure relief valve which will be detected by turbulence in the oil. To check for a slow leak, lift a heavy implement, turn the tractor off & put a ½ inch clear plastic hose on the end of the valve & stick the other end of the hose through the inspection port. With pressure in the pump, a bad valve will likely show some fluid in the hose.

Thank you again will do. I do have the owners manual and service manuals from ford and the U.S Army. I just got this tractor from my grandfather who recently passed away so im just trying to work out the bugs. So far ive replaced the oil and flter pulled radiator and replace it and thrmostat with new ones pulled the gas valve off tank and cleaned out new plugs. Gramps had the Engine overhauled 3 or 4 years ago.the rear tires are both like new. So if I could get the pto running smoother and the brakes to work and the hydralics to hold the load Ilol be in bussiness. Thanks again Tony

You can spend a day working on the hydraulics & get everything thing working just fine w/ all parts & fluid probably costing less than $400.

Pull the top cover, fix the leaky cylinder, pull the pto shaft & just replace the entire thing, drop the pump & clean it & replace the pressure relief valve.

Plenty of folks around here can help you w/ all of those repairs.

What you are hearing is likely not the PTO at all. As the hydraulic pump cams wear, they will knock as they contact the pistons. If it were PTO related, or bearing related, I would expect noise both with and without a load. Below is a quote from http://www.oldfordtractors.com/rep.htm

If your oil is old, dirty, watery, changing it can help a lot,and give you a chance to change the bearing and fix your problem. You can drop the pump for a thorough cleaning, while you have the pto out anyway, and change out some questionable parts.---lha
