9N VS 801 Starter Drives?

The N series starter had an open drive on them and the later fords have the enclosed type which are stronger and the 2 will not interchange with each other

What's the differences in the drives? Outer diameter of gear, shaft diameter, total length? The reason I'm asking is that I have a 144D powered forklift that appears to have the 9N drive (which it has chewed the top of the teeth off of) and I'm thinking that it probably should be using the 801 drive. The flex plate ring gear is new so I'm wandering if the 9n drive has a smaller gear diameter? Thanks.

I just looked through the parts list again and I see what you are saying. That closed nose starter would never work on the ford bell housing that is installed behind this 144D. The starter that was on the engine was the open nose type with the Folo Thru drive. The bell housing has a large "well" cast into it for the long starter shaft. So I guess my next question would be what/is there a difference between the 9n drive for the gas engine and the drive used for the 144-192CID gas engines (600-900 Series?). Both engine groups look like they use the same type starter/drive.
Thanks for your time!

Sorry I can not answer that and be 100% correct since I havew not worked on the diesel engines much but I would think a diesel would use some thing a lot heavier then used on the small flat head gas engines of the N series tractors
