I would still pull off one of the side covers and jack up one wheel. When you spin the wheel you will be able to see if the pinion shaft is turning.

Maybe i WOULD Jack up the rear-end and make sure the tranny is not in neutral because of broken shifter.

Had it happen once.

I always have a tendency to prevent work for myself if not necessary. But at least I recommended about jacking up the tractor. If I had to do the repair, I would have to hunt around for more tools. :)

PS: Snow day cancellations are over now. I made a SNOW TAG ring just in case any of the neighborhood girls wanted to chase me. But even after making a big meat loaf, chocolate cake, Italian salad, etc., yesterday, NO ONE showed up.
