A J.D. serial no.

Is there a way to find the serial no. on a "A" John Deere tractor when tag is distorted to bad to read? any help would be appreciated.

Not unless you can find records from a dealer or previous owner that have it. You can get it down to a somewhat small range of numbers by using casting numbers, but you can't find out what the exact number is.

You can take it off and see if you can do a chalk rubbing on the backside, lightly sand the numbers on the backside or hold it up to a mirror. Rivets are available from your dealer.

I had the same problem with the tag on my A. I put mine in CocaCola and left it for a day or two. It was possible to read two of the numbers. Left it for another two days and another two numbers appeared but the first two had disappeared. Left it for another two days and the last two could be seen. Unfortunately, the middle two could now not be seen. If you want to try this I suggest putting varnish on the numbers as they appear as prolonged immersion in CocaCola seems to dissolve the tag.
