A model oil filter head

I’m having to replace the oil filter head on my A (s/n 596xxx), due to a previous owners heavy hand on the filter cap. I’ve removed the crankcase cover, disconnected the oil lines and removed the three bolts from inside the filter housing. The bottom half of the filter head remained attached, I’m guessing held by the oil filter tube. I’ve been attempting to get everything to go back together for the last two days. It seems there is no way to line up the top half of the filter housing, the spring, and the bottom half from the top of the crankcase. I’ve read several posts saying that it can be done, but as of yet all I’ve succeeded in doing is getting a sore, bruised and bleeding left arm. Of course I can"t see what"s going on, but it feels like the filter head top is hitting the front of the crankcase/cylinders before it"s aligning with the bottom half. Any advice would be certainly appreciated!!!

Thanks!!

Ive done it many times and I hate doing it , one way is drop the oil pump and go in threw that hole, I even pulled the block out of one once and that was the easyway after you get the block out of your way,but going threw oil pump hole comes in second , threw the rod cover is the hardest unless you have a long flexable arm.but youll get it if you live long enough.

You will need to remove that filter tube. It's just lightly presed into that cast assembly. There are holes in the side of it to hook a steel rod with a hook on the end. The bottom half of the oil filter head is held in place by 3 bolts . Remove that and then bolt the 2 halves together. Then bolt the assembly to the filter housing. Maybe using 5/16" threaded rod screwed into to the housing as a guide will help with installation.

Maark, the three bolts are already out, they pass through the bottom part of the filter head and screw into the top part. I've tried to remove the filter tube without success. I tried all the methods I found here, like the 5 gallon bucket bail wire. I made a slide hammer using 1/4 all thread and just broke the all thread where I bent it to hook into the filter tube.

That filer tube is to have a flat plate floating at the top of it that the filter sets against. That plate blocks access to the 3 bolts. Was your plate gone ?

I use a heavy wire with hooks on both ends and form a U at the bottom. I then use a heavy piece of round stock steel to slide up and down in there to act like a hammer and knock it on down. Some are in there pretty good.
