A start timing

I was wondering how to go about checking the start timing on my
49 A. It is still starting hard with good spark and seems to be
getting fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and
God Bless.

it takes a LOT of fuel to get it to start. open petcocks. crank under full choke, two full revolutions. open choke, it should start right up if ignition is good. takes very little compression to have a real nice running A. strong ignition is most important. use autolite 388 plugs or AC C88L"s its pretty tough to flood one. is it hand start or electric? if it has good spark but still difficult, check the shaft in distributor/magneto. if it has lots of wear/slop it will never start easy. if it wont idle slow enough to darn near count the fan blades when fully warm, smoothly, you have either ignition or carb problems. even with leaky valves & very low compression they will idle very slow n smooth if fuel & ignition is on the mark.

you might take the small cap off the choke lever and see if the pin that operates the choke shaft is bent so that the choke disk isn't closing completely.

It is electric start, and I put new plugs and wires, also has new points, condenser, rotor and cap, so she is getting good spark. The carb rebuild kit just came in today so I will try that. Thank you.

Thank you very much that was very helpful. I"ve been searching around for a while and thats what I"ve been looking for. Thank You.

I have the same problem as you. My 51 John deer A starts very hard, never did before. Had tractor for 30 plus years. I live in wisconsin and use it just for plowing snow. The last few years I had to run tractor with choke half way out for it to run smooth. Put carb of of a John deere B on. It didnt start any easier but ran with choke pushed all the way in. I have fresh fuel in tank. Carb frosts up snow white. Dont understand that either. I adjusted the points, dont have the blue spark that I would like to see its more yellow. I wonder if the spark could be advanced or off. A 1950 tractor is pretty basic compaired th the tractors today. I wouldnt think this should be to hard to figure out. Happy holidays and have a great day! Ron

none of that means its getting good spark. points only work if set right & very little wear on shaft/bushing in distributor. wires only work well if solid core. coil needs to be good, & magnet strong if a magneto, along with the impulse tripping properly on a magneto. plugs need to be the right heat range, & in my opinion, from lots of experience, not champions. good spark when cranking/testing dont always mean good spark when at running speed, again possibly due to faulty impulse on mag or worn shaft on either. dont ask how i know ( the hard way). good luck! never give up
