Abrasive Wheels

Just wondering what you all are using for grinding wheels. Specifically for your 4 1/2" grinders and 6" cutoff(Metabo) wheels.

I'm about out of both and would like to order 25 to 50 of each to save a few bucks, but I dont want to get stuck with a whole bunch of junk. The ones I've been using were cheap auction buys and an assortment. I don't think the cutoff wheels were even marked with a name.

I found a place called Keen Abrasives, looks like they are in Canada, and assume their stuff might be made there. They claim it good. About $1 a wheel. Anybody tried it?

My local tool supply is $1.50 in quanities of 50 and most of the name brand stuff on Ebay falls in the middle.

I've tried the Big Lots wheels before and I assume the 50 pack grinding wheels on Ebay for $9.99 will be just as bad.

Sait. Outlasts the hardware store discs at least 6 to 1

The only Canadian made grinding wheels are Abmast and they are pretty decent wheels. $1 a disc basically means they're junk. Walter are premium grinding/cutting wheels. Tyrolit, Sait and Norton are OK but especially for cutting/zip discs, Walter(Metabo) is the Cadillac of disc's and last the longest. You can get the HP combo or pipeliner that will do cutting and light grinding. The zip disc's are strictly for cutting though.

I'd be concerned about the price. Seems low which could reflect quality. Your best wheel is going to be PFERD with Walter and others in there too. I bought some Mibro stuff at TSC on sale for $1/ blade. Don't seem too bad, but there is better.

Harbor-Freight has 10-packs and they seem to good..

Price is right...

Either Cut-Off, or Grinding discs (4 1/2")..

I don't do much grinding and cutting with my 4" tools but I get grinding and cutting discs from my Ace Hdwe supplier and I checked and most wheels are Norton.don't have a clue as to what they cost.Not much help I fear.

Buy some NORZON wheels made by Norton. They have a ceramic of some kind in them and if you look at the material they remove it doesn't look like grinding dust, it looks like miniture chips like you'd get off a drill, lathe, etc. Heck when using one on a 10 inch grinder I've had the 'chips' stick in my pants and had to pull them out. All in all they cut pretty much anything you put them on like it's hot butter and last way longer than any wheel I've ever used.

As far as purchase price they aren't the cheapest wheels in existance by any means but they will outlast pretty much anything else you can put on your grinder by probably 4 or 5 to one. In other words instead of having to get 50 of them you can most likely get away with just buying 10 or so and get the same amount of grinding done.

Just be sure you get the right rpm rating for that Metabo. It turns at a higher RPM than most other grinders and the cheaper ones that are rated lower will fly apart and can cause injury or death. We've had that happen on some of our job sites. Just my thoughts, keith

I bought a ten pack of harbor freight grinding wheels that I would give away. They are too fine and too slow. I don't know about the cut off disks.

I have used the Harbor freight cut off wheels 4 1/2" and they seem ok. and seem to last pertty good.
Been cutting r-bar with then. their a lot cheeper then the ones for the chop saw and cut just as quick.

Norzon do last the longest but they are quite expensive. Used them at a shop for grinding the last bit of chromium carbide overlay off after gouging the majority of it off. Still seemed to take forever compared to mild steel but needed to be done so sections of pipe could be welded together. The overlay was re-applied after the pipe was welded together.

Thats my suggestion in order of my preference. No such thing as cheap abrasives...sure some are 1/2 the cost, but the last 1/3 the life...making them more expensive in the long haul.
