Adding Hydraulic Fluid

I just completed major work on the rear end of my 1951 8N and seeing that I live in Minnesota and the Pole Barn is not heated I wanted to add the hydraulic fluid before it got to cold. I will not start the tractor till spring but, like winterizing my motorcycle, I like to have fresh fluids added before a long winters nap.

I have read in many places to remove the lower bolt on the inspection plate cover and add oil till it comes out. So that is what I did. I emptied a partial bucket of oil and started adding from a new 5 gallon bucket. As I was watching for the oil to come out the bolt hole my funnel filled up with oil and I overflowed the transmission case.

I had a pretty good laugh when I realized that the oil is so stiff it does not flow very well. I let the oil drain until the system equalized and then buttoned it up. Good thing I have a lot of saw dust around the shop to soak it up. I did not split the tractor, but every other gasket is new and oil is no longer running out the 3pt lower pins. The Question: will my clutch be impacted by this little caper?

No, it won't. Even if the transmission front seal leaked, there is a weep hole at the bottom of the clutch housing, and provided it's not plugged up(there is supposed to be a cotter pin in it that acts as a jiggle pin) any oil would seep out of there before contacting the clutch. Good Luck with your tractor in the spring.

Good evening gentlemen: In warm climates, that cotter ("jiggle pin") will keep dirt daubers from getting into the bell housing.

Weekend project is to locate the "Jiggle Pin". I was going to rebuild the carburetor but now have to wait for a rebuilt replacement. My inexperience came thru and I FUBAR'd the original. I guess you don't learn much if everything goes perfectly.
