I read a post a couple pages back about oil additives and some people disagree about using them. They named one in paticular that I have never used but one that I have is Sea Foam but only in the gas tank and it seems to help for me. The manufactuer claims all kinda uses for this product including gas tanks, crankcases & for use in injector cleaning machines just to name a few. I'm thinking of using it in my engine this spring when I change the oil to see if it might help to clean up the valves a little bit but I'm not sure. Just wondering how many of you has used this and in how many ways. And does it seem to work?

JD,
GM has some wonderfull stuff for de-carbonizing valves and heads. Its called Top Engine Clean. You can get it in spray form and introduce it through the carb at the air intake.

JD Ga,Most additives in my opinion are what I call Dr. Good Snake Oil.The only thing they do is make money for the store and product distributors ect.But I'm a firm believer in Sea Foam.Good for engines that have not been ran in a long time,or for a engine thats going to be stored over the winter or longer periods of time. Its good for stuck valves and rings, and carburetor and injectors.Good stuff and I have used it for years.

Stuff like that for the most part is a wast of $$ A lot of things your better off with out of would you believe using ATF is as good or better and cheaper to boot

Yes a D carbonation is very beneficial to yer tractor are car valves are injection system ,,, I just fixed a Toyota this week that was a hard starter cold,,, carbon had built up on the valves and the carbon was soak'n up the fuel and leaned it out so that it made it hard to start,,, then when it started it ran richer than chit from all the raw fuel in the carbon,,, goes to show ya how stupid some folks are YES it works,,, It can B even done under the shade tree with out special tools,,, a top engine clean'n is one of the better things one can do to yer chit,,, fuel deposits are a major problem,,, any one care to take this recommendation on have at it

cheap chemicals will not ger'er done,,, the good chit cost

GM top engine cleaner
BG products
Chrysler foam top engine cleaner
OMC marine top engine cleaner (fogger)
Techron by Chevron (the best)
even sea foam works (rite good chit)

Back in high school in 1979, auto shop teacher told us about GM top end cleaner.
We used it on any car that would not pass inspection for emmissions , or was running rough after a normal tune up and carb adjustment.
It was unbelievable how good this stuff worked !!

Have you ever heard the phrase "If it ain't broke...?"

What in heck makes you think that the valves shouldn't have carbon on them? They DO operate in a fossil fuel environment, don't they?

Do you think that carbon is going to do your motor good when it breaks loose? How are you going to feel when a chunk of it gets beneath the valve and the seat and burns a valve?

Leave it alone and quit wasting money of snake oil. (Or send the money to me and I'll get my tarot-card reading neighbor to remove the carbon for twice as long.)

I agree with HOBO. It does work. You can tell every time an engine that has had the benefit of using them. MY small engines like blowers and snow blowers have seen the benefit of Sea Foam. Suit yourself, whatever turns your crank, but Im a believer.

Go back to page 10 re Lucas posted on 01-09. Tests made by Bob the Oil Guy. You may find it informative. I don't know how valid the tests are as it looks like it was a 1 to 1 ratio.

Yes JD. Your local GM dealer is the only place to get it. Its not cheap but, it does what it is intended to do which is remove carbon deposits and varnish. It is NOT "Snake oil" It is simply a chemical that removes normal deposits left behind in a normal internal combustion engine.

JD-
Read the labels! Know what is in the product you are throwing $$$ at. Most of these products are alcohol or mineral spirits based. Yes, they may loosen up the crud but so will GUMOUT and similar items...I have no problem using mineral spirits (buy in bulk) and a good compressed air blow-out to clean parts once off the vehicle. Check out yer newer fuel injector cleaners - Alcohol. MMO -mineral spirits...etc...kerosene and diesel fuel -old stand-bys...but if it works for you go for it.

I've heard of introducing water through the intake on a car to produce steam to clean up carbon. But how would I go about doing that to the tractor?

(quoted from post at 00:12:21 01/18/09) Its called water. Some of you pups need education.

36 I know well how water can break carbon loose,,, BTDT,,, on 2 days engines its not much help as it use to B,,, emissions introduce unburnt fuel mixed with the exhaust back in to the intake ,,, what it puts their water will not dissolve,,, gotta remember I work on modern chit all day and thats the way my think'n cap is put on,,, gotta agree water will help clean whats in the combustion chamber but not very affective on whats collects on the back side of the valves,,, BTW fixed another hard starter ,,, would start but not idle,,, 98 dodge V6 just used a tooth brush and some throttle body cleaner to clean the throttle bore and IAC valve,,, water would not been of no help on this'n

Garden hose with a lite spray,,, maintain the RPM and spray as not to stall the engine,,, water is in the air just not enuff to do much good...

It does clean out the crud in a cylinder. On a leaky head gasket the cylinder taking in water will be very clean.WW2 aircraft used water injection to boost power. This has been known since Model T days.

Take the hose of the carb and spray in some windshield washer fluid.A Windex sprayer works fine. You can use the Windex if you want.My old chevy pickup was getting real bad at after running.Thats when an engine keeps running after the ignition is shut off.Found a water injection kit in a used tool store for 2 bucks.Put it on and put some wind shield wash in the bottle. After running stopped after a pint was used.
