adjustable 1/2 inch v-belt

Hi guys. I"m looking for a source for an adjustable (non-endless) v-belt for our WD-45. It"s been converted to an alternator some time ago, and the belt broke. A 45 inch is too short and a 46 inch is too long. The 46 fits, but if it stretches at all it"ll be too long. I don"t see how I could get an idler/tension pulley to fit for this application. Thanks for any suggestions/ideas.

You could try you nearest heavy truck parts store, they often keep them for spares especially for reefer units. That"s where i get mine.

Guess I don't quite understand. Even converted to an alternator, it should still pivot enough to take up any slack in a belt. That said, I think Northern Hydraulics sells them. Heavy truck, or even a good car parts store should be able to get them as well.

I agree..I would have thought there would be plenty of adjustment, but there just isn't that much at all. The 45 inch belt pulls the alternator all the way to the inside, and the longer belt requires the alternator be shifted all the way out. The middle would be just right. I have the 46 inch on right now, and it fits..but when it ultimately stretches I'll need the 45 inch belt, which is the size that was on that broke. It's a real pain to change the belt on the WD-45. I wasn't able to get the lower radiator hose to bend enough to go back on so I had to take the whole darned water pump off, put the hose on, make a new gasket, then put it all back together again. REALLY don't look forward to doing that in the near future!

I"ve gotten the belt you"re looking for at Grainger. I used them on a washing machine. The belt threaded around several pulleys and required dismantling the whole machine to change. I would thread the belt through, connect and tighten it, worked great.

Another possibility would be changing pulley size. My preference would be just a bit smaller if possible. This would also speed up the alternator, which would help as your tractor engine doesn"t turn as fast as a car engine. Pulleys should be cheap and plentiful at the local junkyard. Also some of the auto stores carry chrome universal alternator adjustment arms, they may have a longer slot and gain you some room. (and the chrome looks pretty)

Hope this helps, Jon

if your looking for NON endless belt why do you want another broken one?would be easy to put on but then what, how you gonna join it?

V belts are available at any parts supply in half inch increments. There are different ways to change a V belt. You may have to remove the mounting bolts to get the belt around the pulley's.

Makes me think you have the wrong radiator hose if it doesn"t bend enough to come off the pipe. And I"d pull the radiator before pulling the water pump if it was that difficult. Four bolts on the hood, two underneath, and slide the rad forward. Why risk a leaky seal on the pump? Never a problem with it in over 5 decades. With an alternator, try leaving it totally unbolted, twist it a bit to get the belt on, then install bolts.

The way the belt is routed on the WD-45, it's impossible to get it on without pulling the lower radiator hose. The problem is, the hose in only a few inches long, and with the old one being in rough shape, I replaced it, meaning a new, hard-to-bend hose was there. With it only being a few inches long, I wasn't able to bend it even close to allow me to fit the belt in there. I was asking about the non-endless belt because someone had mentioned they knew of them being used instead of tearing so much apart on these to change a belt.
I wasn't able to find a 45.5 inch belt. They ARE available at auto parts stores?
Thanks again for the help.

You might want to try a "extra service" or "severe service" belt. I have had one on my WD since 1973. They do not stretch very much at all even after years of use. I think I got mine at "Advance Auto" or "Auto Zone".

The pully on the water pump is adjustable. The falnges can be adjusted aparat and together. Most of the time the adjustment is stuck, rusted, stuck with paint etc. However you can use it as a belt tensioner if it is working. I don't run a generator and just run a belt around the crank and water pump, using the pump pully to get the tension.
