Adjusting neutral safety switch on 4020

I went to put a new neutral safety switch on a late model 4020 sync range. I used the little tool to check and see how many shims it took and it didn't take any. I adjusted the upper shift arm end play to the spec in the instructions and it still isn't right. Does anybody have any pictures or diagrams of the pin that is supposed to push that switch in and how to fix it?

If you go to JDparts.com,open parts cat.# 1116 for 4020's >SN 20100,click on the "part index" and type in the part # R99556 it will direct you to correct page for the pin in the 4020 PC.

Toss the 20 page instruction pamphlet, use one shim screw it in and go on.... Deere should make these switches and new wire lead as "cost efficient" as they can (skip the over done instructions) so that every one will keep this safety system "working". I make sure they work on every tractor that comes through my shop, not only for possible liability reasons but to help keep my customers and their family alive..There have been some close calls and a few new door openings from by-passing these switches...

When did JD come up with the gauge? I don't remember the gauge when I stood behind a JD parts counter. I totally agree that the neutral(SAFETY) start switch should be in operating order. Several people had had accidents around me from by-passing the NS switch

When I was at deere 12 years ago they came with the guage. Just don't use brake clean to clean the guage if its the same white plastic guage. chris

I had trouble getting a neutral switch working, and after taking all shims out. I resorted to taking a magnet and pulling the detent out. I used the mig welder and put a flat spot of weld on the back side of the detent. Then flattened it back nice and smooth. It was a reverse shim, if you want to call it that. Before all that, we adjusted the shifter as close to the trans case as possible, but it still wouldn't work, without building up the detent. Whatever you do, don't fix it with a cotter pin, saftey first.

Normally when you have that problem the shifter shaft needs drawn through the shift arm a bit.

Tried 1 shim, 2 shims, no shims, still didn't work. There was no end play in the shifter shaft and arm assembly so I tapped the shaft in just a tad and it worked for awhile although it would start in any gear. Ran it all day moving bales and back to square 1 where it won't start again. Is that R99556 pin something that is prone to wear and needs to be replaced?
