advice on first deere

ok, looking at two tractors.. first off it will be a toy, not used. First one a 1939 model AN, great metal, runs great, good tires, second one a 60N, metal is ok, water pump leaks, smokes a little, tires average. Both are same price.. whats the best one to get?

Depends if you are going to be using the tractors are not, the 60 has alot more upgraded hydralics and engine stuff that would make it better for use. Also the 60 could of had power steering which would make it the better buy.

For me it would be the AN. I grew up spending a lot of time on two 60s and loved every second of it. But you say it is going to be a toy so go with the AN. You can impress the kids with the hand start, or embarrass yourself when it don't. lol. The 60 will cost you some money to get it like you want it and the AN is pretty much there. Thats my opinion.

Remember, tires cost a fortune. Look for calcium damage on the rims - if it is present, expect to replace the rims.

I would definitely get the 60. I do not see a '39 "AN" being anywhere near as useful and valuable as a 60.

BUTTTTT--- if you're a NOVICE at mechanical work, stick with the "AN," a lot less to figure out.

Either way, both tractors can be learned about by reading the Operators and service manuals.

Based on your description, the 39AN would be my choice of toys.

I say go with the older one. A 30-something-anything, running, is a novelty plus being less complicated for a newcomer. Then you will run into a 60 later, they are always around, for the time being they are still pretty easy bargins. Paul

buy em both. cut your teeth on the A. then follow up with the 60.
