Air Breather

I just bought an old ford tractor. It ran good, everything worked, and it came with a finishing mower for $2,000. When I got home with it, I looked up the S/N and found it to be a 1941 9N. My neighbor has a 1940 9N, and the air breather in his comes up through the hood. Mine stops under the hood with a screen around the top. Anyone know if mine was originally desighned that way, or what is the deal?

I have a 46 2N, and mine stops under the hood. I think you neighbor's is equiped with an optional precleaner. But I'm sure the guys will correct me if I'm wrong.

Optional, dealer installed, if I remember correctly.

Thanks you guys for your help. Some of the things on this tractor have been changed, like I have one 8N front wheel assembly. This tractor will work hard for a couple years with good up keep. When I am finished with my new house, I will restore and continue using on my little 11 acre tract of land for garden, drive, and grass.
Thanks again!
