air tool oil

My not very old CP air chisel has been hesitant to start for a while. It now refuses to do anything. I have run Marvel Mystery oil through it since new.
And that reminded me of a study on diesel fuel lubricity additives I saw where MMO actually made it worse!
So should I get some "air tool oil" at my local auto supply, or just use some motor oil?

I use 5w-30 motor oil, or whatever I have on hand. I know it isn't correct but it's a whole lot better than nothing and it has never caused any problems or issues.

Hello Bob Bancroft,
You need to take the tool apart and clean it.It sounds as if all the gut is gummed up!
You may be able to use the opposite edge of the air motor vanes , giving new a new surface
Air tool oil is my choice, there is once you get it going again.
I sometimes used ATF just because the bottle was handy. NO motor oil. Why look for trouble?.Just use air tool oil.
Guido.

I only use air tool oil in my impact wrenches especially and other air driven tools. Never had a problem and my tools date back to early '80's. I have used Marvel, but not for that....upper cylinder lube but haven't used it for a long time. No real reason, just using different things these days.

I have 1 air chisel that comes unscrewed in the middle and quits working often If I would loctite it I would need to take it apart soon.

Which Marvel oil did you use?

There is one that is strictly for air tools and is different than the gas/oil blend mix.

I've using MMO for years on my air tools (and engines) without and issues. Have you been using the same oil in any other tools and are they acting similar?

Marvel Mystery Oil for air tools

I used nothing but Hy tran oil , since I was around it all day at the Case dealer where I worked , and ATF before that , used the same CP air tools all that time. Main thing is to not let them sit with moisture in them overnite.

Just the regular stuff. I begin to think it's more of a detergent than a lubricant. I've had good luck using it to free up the numerous cables used on tractors of today.
My other air tools are fine, treated the same way.

I use MM Air Tool Oil and have no problems. I do put a couple of drops in the inlet when I finish using the tool and cycle it to assure that there's a good amount in the tool during storage.

Do you have an air dryer on the line? I used to work in a Gardner-Denver plant that made air tools and the worst issue we would see was rust caked up in the tools due to water in the inlet lines.

If you have never taken an air tool apart it's an interesting thing to do to see just how simple the mechanism is but at the same time you see small parts made to very precise tolerances. It doesn't take much foriegn material to clog the small passages or cause the rotor vanes to stick.

I have Had a CP734 since the mid-70. It does not get used every day but it has been used. I have use several lube, MMR, WD-40, and the lube recommended for my Boring Hone which is one quart of 40W oil in two gallons of Diesel/Kerosene. It still work good to day. One of the BEST thing I did for this impact was put a boot on it to protect the tools case.

you dont use oil on an air chisel. there is a disc in the tool that sticks if you do. you need to take it apart and clean the disk with emery cloth

Really? I always have oiled my air chisel just the same as my impact wrench and I've never had a problem.

Working in a railroad Locomotive repair shop,
with 20 locomotives in under the roof, at one
time, and dozens of air impacts going, they
supplied us with "Snap-On" air tool oil. I never knew of anyone having a problem. But "Snap-On"
smelled the same as Marvel Mystery oil brand.

Bob after 20+ years in the tire shop we found the only thing to use is AIR Tool oil. It is not ATF. Anything else would gum things up. Use a lot of air tool oil, put it in the air line where the tool hooks to the air line, should ungum it in no time.

We use marvel mystery oil at work. We probably have 10000 diferent grinders, buffers, drills, routers, grinders, you name it and we have it. We keep a 5 gallon can in the tdifferent tool rooms.
