Hi, I hope someone can help! Yesterday I was using my allis C to plow, and for all summer it has been running like a champ. all of a sudden the rpm's kicked into a speed that I never thought was possible, when i reduced the throttle it did nothing, would not slow down, but before i could I could get the mag grounded out it quit.When I took the the cover off the governor I found total havoc had occoured. The weights had broken off and there was a big section of the gear that was broken off. I found a different on and it is on the way but I need to know how to install it correctly? Are there any timing marks on the gear? do I just go by # 1 cylinder on tdc then install it in corralation with the mag? What could have caused this? also with the governer linkage unhooked will the throttle on the carb automatically move back? is there a spring return in/on the carb? I need help please!

This is at TDC on the flywheel for number one cylinder on the compression stroke.

There is no spring return. If the linkage would come detached for some reason the draft would tend to open the throttle butterfly.

If you have a anti surge spring which is connected from the linkage a few inches in front
of the carb(toward the radiator) to a manifold
stud it will close the carb.

If the weights and gears disintergrated you better remove the oil pan and clean it, thats where a lot of the peices will end up. there will also be peices that need to be cleaned up where the mag was fastened on.

thanks for all your help! I was able to pick the vast majority of the parts an pieces out of the area but I will see what I have to do to get the rest if there is any. Found a used one and got it coming, But still have questions... since I have never seen one that is intact and heard talk of governor springs, are there springs on the weight? if so should I change them before I install it? I want to keep this running right because this has been in the family since it was new, Grandfather-Father-now Me

No there are no springs inside. There's the anti surge springs which may or maynot be there. That is the one just forward of the carb.
The other is the one the goes between the trottle and the governor link the goes across the
front of the motor to the carb link. There is a thrust bearing that goes on the gov. shaft.
If you don't have a manual I would diffently buy one. They explain how to but it back to gether pretty good. I would also put a magnet on the oil pan next to the drain plug so if you missed
any little parts the magnet will hopefully catch them. Just remember to remove it as the oil is draining when you change it.
