Allis B Mag.

I have a 1946 Allis model B that recently begun to run a little rough of and on. Then one day just wouldn"t fire at all. After some investigation I found the little center pin on the outer Mag cover had broken off. I assume this is the problem. My question is this. The tractor has been converted to a 12 volt system. It also has had a coil, and condensor installed. They basically drilled a hole through the side of the Mag and wired the coil and condensor to the inside of the Mag. with a key (on off switch) wired direct to the coil. I am thinking about putting it back to a straight mag with no coil. Will the mag work on a 12 volt system and is it difficult to switch it back?

A fully functional magneto creates its own electricity. It is totally independent of the tractor electrical system. The magneto does not care if the tractor has been converted to 12 volts or if it is still the original 6 volt system. The magneto does not care because it is not connected to any part of the tractor electrical system. In fact, the magneto will create spark and fire the engine even if the tractor does not have a battery or generator or alternator.

As Rusty says. Also sounds like either way you need a new cap for that mag and they are not cheap. A manual also would help you a lot. If you don't have a manual for the mag drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a manaul for that mag since I have one in the computer some one else sent me

You need to know whether the ignition system was just 'changed' when the new 12 volt system was added or because the mag was no good. I would guess the latter. As stated previously, you can just reinstall the mag system. I would look for a replacement in good working order.

Thanks for your reply Old. I am going to purchase a new cap and I do not have a Manual for the mag so if you wouldn't mind sending that along it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all your help.

Another option might be to replace the mag with a distributor as was used on later Allis(and other) tractors. May find one used at a decent price. Since the tractor is already converted to 12V you probably arent too concerned with originality and you can always convert it back later if you want. GBood Luck,
Paul
