I have a completely restored tractor back to new condition. It is all original 6 volt, except it has an 8 volt battery. All wiring harness and electrical items are new and rebuilt. The ground strap is heavy duty braided, and the battery cables are heavy duty. I cannot get the tractor to crank reliably because it will barely turnover. It runs perfectly when I can get it cranked. Is there a way to jump it off using 12 volt without taking all the 6 volt light bulbs out and the fuse in the switch box? I knew going back with 6 volt would not be as reliable as 12 volt, but I figured if it was crankable when it was new, it should be able to get it back in the same state as when new. Any suggestions?

How many amps are you getting to the starter? If only a couple hundred, probably a poor battery or wiring; if four or five hundred probably a starter problem. best, Yeoman

I put an 8 volt battery in my John Deere Mod 'B' that is a 6 volt system and had a lot of problems. First, the cut-out switch, and I am told that a voltage regulator will do the same, senses the 8 volts from the battery and will not allow the cut-out switch to close and let the generator charge the battery because the cut-out thinks that the battery is fully charged.
If you have a 3-brush genny you can set the 3rd brush for maximum charge and in some instances it will charge the batter at a minimum rate.
I bought a new 6 volt battery (the biggest one that would fit in my 'B') and life is good, everything works fine. You have to keep all of the connections clean like you would in any DC Battery System.

I have a CA and cranks well on 6 volts. Maybe your cables are too light. Maybe starter needs brushes.
