Hello I'm new to the forum and just purchased my first allis chalmers it's a model d grader serial #D-3842 need help with information on the year the engine is a four cylinder gas will need carb rebuild and fuel tank cleaning

Thank you that makes parts a lot easier to find does anyone know the year I'm thinking it's a mid 1950s I'll try to upload some pics today

The Model D was built from 1949-1965, and used the 226 cu in engine- same as the WD45, or 226 power unit. 58 brake hp. D-3842 is a 1954 model. There was also a "gasoline special", which had larger tires as well as a hyd operated blade circle.

Great info thank you it is a manual rotate with 8.25 x 20 tires that will need replacing soon dry rotted pulled carb and cleaned and rebuilt it today checked points and plugs they look very good so hopefully have it ready to run soon

I no longer have my D grader or any of the related data or I could tell you exactly the year from the serial number. I guess the mid 50's but I am certain that someone that has the serial number listing will come up with an exact year.

I recently bought a Model D that seems to be in fairly good condition. The frame # is: D-3789. Does anyone know the year it was made? It does not have a serial # on the engine block, so it was probably replaced some time in the past. I think it was owned by a county in southeast Colorado.

When it warms up I will start cleaning it and changing the fluids, and fix a little of this and that.

A couple of pics are attached.

My chart shows 1954. It has a WD45 engine, which is correct as they were made from 1953 to 1957

Thanks Bob, I like knowing as much as possible about the grader. I have been able to buy 4 different manuals (Shop, Parts, Maintenance and Operators) for it. Some things are duplicated but they all have things that the others don't. Helps a lot when trying to fix things on it.

Funny you posted this, I bought one too Saturday! I haven’t even got serial number yet, but my motor is stuck. Still in the cleaning phase

Now that is a nice grader, especially with that dozer blade on the front. That is the first one I have seen. It doesn't happen to have the dual range transmission does it?

Your looks like it may be a bit later than mine (D-3789) due to the front wheel style. It's nice to see that there is another D grader with lugs twisted off. Mine has about one on each wheel.

It's difficult to determine if it have power steering? I hope it does or else the added weight of the blade will make turning even more of an effort.

I think mine was owned by a county so it has lights all over the place front and rear, not that any of them actually work!! That will be a project all by itself.

Mine is D 3099, so earlier!

John,

When you sit on the seat, is there one lever there for the throttle, or are there two levers? The second would be for the dual range transmission.

I have three model D graders. Best to look carefully in front of the cab where the big tube is welded to the cab. A common area for cracks. You may see some massive welds in the area too. 1954 seems right, it will have the WD45 if original engine. Early machines had a WC, and later had a ser 1 D17 engine. Each of mine has a different engine in it. You have some nice options. Closed cab, hyd turntable and both power steering and leaning front wheel.
