I AM IN NEED OF SOME KNOWLEDGE ON WHAT ENGINES WILL INTERCHANGE TO MY A/C-D GRADER,[PROBABLY MADE IN MID 1950 S] THE ORIGINAL FOUR CYLINDER GAS MOTOR NEEDS REBUILT OR REPLACED,I HAVE HEARD THAT SOME COMBINE MOTORS WOULD INTERCHANGE ,I WOULD JUST AS SOON REPLACE THE MOTOR AS REBUILT IF I KNEW WHAT WOULD WORK WITH MY GRADER. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

If I remember right a WC/Wd/WD45 engine will all pretty much bolt right in to them since that is pretty much what they where but as I said if I remember right

I just scrapped out an AC cotton stripper with a good 4 cylinder diesel engine. I was told it would fit a D17 or D45 but I'm not sure. If you (or anyone else) are interested, contact me, but you have first shot at it for $500. I cut 4 bolts and the complete unit came out like a self contained power unit. It has not been started of a year or so but has been stored indoors.

I would stick with a WD45 or D17 motor with 226 inches, not the smaller 201 motor. If you bought a WD motor, make sure it has been redone and improved. The added HP would be nice.

Hi Tracy , i am interested in your motor , but i would like to be pretty certain that it will fit. one of the other responses , named some diesel motors . can you read those and tell if your motor is one of them? where are you located at ? thanks

The rebuild kits from the suppiers on the Allis sites are not all that costly for the 226 engine. If you install a kit for the D17 engine you get a little more compression and hp. The parts in the kit give you essentially a new engine when you are done. I don't think that the diesel engine from the WD45 or D17 diesel tractors would be a simple bolt in conversion as the engines are longer and would require revisions to the hydraulic pump location, rad and front engine mount to name a few. I have to rebuild mine because it smokes so bad that no one will work down wind of it. They started calling it Old Smokey.

Kenneth, Have D Motorgraders. You are going to spend time to change out the following if you get anything else except what is in your Model D.

262 (6cyl)diesel- need to move the front motor mount frame, possibly extent the frame where the radiator sits because the 6cyl is longer than the 4 cyl and rad needs to be moved too. Dont forget the flywheel and clutch assembly.

Combine (D-17 Z)engine- need to RR water pump, govenor, timing gear cover, and to align up the Hyd pump with the crank pulley you may need to cut the crankshaft. Need to do clutch and flywheel assembly. Well worth the trouble if you want a 63Hp engine instead of the 40-45Hp engine that may be in yours.

Look on the Carb side of the engine for a flat area with stamped ###"s like 45-##### or 17-##### this will tell you what engine you have. Hopefully you will have a 45 or D-17 engine (226) and not a WD (201)engine(identified by a bolt on plate on the side. Also the SN of the unit (located on the right side of the cab frame) tells you what sorta type of engine should be in the unit WD,45 or 17 etc..(looking in the Parts Manual)

Had a 45 engine on mine and since I do not have a garage to work on it, if I had to do it all over again I would just purchase a rebuild kit with all seals, bearings, sleeves, rings etc.. and have the head/valves done. The engine was a good price $400. but the shipping cost me about another $500 after all was said and done. then the labor to do it and the time. For the cost it would of been quicker, cheaper and less headaches to have the engine rebuilt and I would of known it was an exact fit. Am still working on it cause it is taking time.

Great machines and dont get discouraged, keep on trucking. Worth the labor and they do a great job. Call me if you need more info 505-470-4638

thanks to everyone for all the information , after weighing everything I am going to rebuild my motor,I know it will fit back without any surprises. The last time I used some thing other than original turned into a costly and time con summing nightmare, thanks for reminding me of that.
