Allis Chalmers?

Hello everyone. I have a question. I am trying to help my grandfather with his tractor. It is an Allis Chalmers and we believe it is a 48. We are unsure of what model it is and we need help with some wiring issue. We found this # on the engine WD205780GA. My guess is it's a WD? Someone at some point in time messed with the switch to it and the swith is messed up and wires are unhooked. It will spin over but it will not fire. (no spark) I want to replace and rewire the switch but need a manual and or some help and without knowing the model we don't want to get the wrong manual. Many thanks to anyone that can help. Jim

It's a WD, first mfgd in 1948. Tractor serial number is found on the left rear vertical face of the differential- will start with 'WD'. Some early ones were also stamped on the left brake cover. Service manual for the tractor is I&T AC-11. That manual does have a wiring diagram, but does not indicate wire gauge. Tractor came with a magneto- impulse should make a clicking sound when turning over. May be bad internal coil or magnet if no spark.

as JMS said, it should be a magnito and does not need wires or battery to start. if there is a wire on the mag, take it off. if it is grounded, the mag will not fire. thre may be a toggle kill switch. --- a mag has 4 plug wires on the black cap. a distributor has a 5th center terminal for the coil.

if it is a mag, take off the black plastic cover with the plug wires. clean the point faces, they will be corroded. if that still dont work, change out the condenser in the mag. normally that will fix it. last resort is the internal coil is bad.

There is a single wire to the mag that has always been there not counting the plug wires. I am not used to messing with 6 volt stuff or the positive ground. If one was to do the 12 volt conversion does it remain positive ground? Are there any con's to doing the 12 volt swap? Thanks for all the info. I have already ordered the manual. Thanks again, Jim
