Allis dozer

At the Camp Creek Threshers show in Nebraska, there were more dozers present than in the past. There was a very large Allis dozer, comparable in size to a Cat D-6, early 50s. Unique to this crawler were a pair of hydraulic cylinders up by the operators platform. Mounted vertical, they could lift the entire chassis nose-first about 25degrees. Was it used in hills? Any ideas?

That is the dozer lift. There is something unigue about that dozer, I have read about it in a book on the Allis crawlers, but can't find the book right now.

Its a Baker dozer, there were several models, What made them special, is that without the outside frame, the whole unit was 8' wide, so you didn't need a special permit to haul them. The lack of an outer frame, also subjected the entire frame of the dozer to more stress. They were supposedly marketed to oil field operators, to dig catch pits. All of this is covered, in more depth in Norm Swinford's book

That would be either an HD9 or an HD15. There was a contractor in my hometown of Oberlin, KS who had one of them which he used to dig a trench silo for Dad in the early 1950's.
The nice thing about them was that the total width was only 8 feet making for easy hauling.
