I have a 1949 8n ,12v with front end distributor.I have a question about alternaters.What would be the minimal amount of equipment to test an alternater,and how to go about doing it Thanks

Auto parts house will test it for free if you remove it and take it in..

Have you done the quick test by checking across the battery posts with the tractor running. Analog meter required. With it running about half throttle you should read about 14.5 volts if the alternator is working like it should..

Any bit of steel, (i use a hacksaw blade) held close to the pulley nut while the engine is running will be atracted if the alternator is charging.

Due to all of the electrical noise (static) around these tractors most suggest a low cost analog voltmeter. Read voltage across battery terminals with the tractor running. Should show over 13v if charging.

That doesn't prove a damned thing.

All it proves is that the rotor is magnetized.

Even IF the rotor is magnetized, you can have a bad stator or bad rectifier bridge and NO battery charging output.

A test lamps would also be nice to have too.
