Alternator?????

Another question,
I have a 41 9N converted to 12v before I got it. The other day my battery was almost dead. Put it on charger and no problems since. I checked my voltage at the alternator with out it running 12.09vdc - With it running 12.07vdc. I also noticed it only has one post and no voltage regulator. If the regulator is built in how is there only the one post and why does the tractor continue to run without the battery giving out. I ran it for 10 hrs today turning it off 4 or 5 times. She continued to start with no problem. One other thing, while running, I disconnected the positive lead to the battery and she dies.
I would appreciate any help and input - good or bad.
Thanks,

Brent ,Your alternator is not charging at all.Take it to a parts store for a free test.Running volts should be 13.9 to 14.8.

IF it really is an alternator, then removing the battery cable while it is running will damage it if it has not already.

Post back about the link jmor sent you.. we need a lil more info.

I measured voltage at half throtle (normal operating speed) Yes it is the Delco-Remy the exploded pic of the three alternators.

Delco 10-SI set up as 1-wire units are known to need speed to kick in and some data sheets even instruct to momentarily jumper the output stud to the space terminal #1, while running to get them to start charging, so you might try that and as was mentioned, get the free test.

What free test? My local Napa dealer now charges $5 for the test. It's only free if the alternator is bad AND you buy a replacement from him.

Thanks for the help. If I can slow down long enough this week, I will cary it to the parts store. Had 55tons of rock delivered to the house today - working this old 9N. Still getting settled in new house, been here since Dec. 1st. Many years of work left to do. I think I can do it in a day or two. Ha!Ha!!
What my wife thinks anyway.
Thanks again,

Please for your own safety do not pull a battery cable to check to see if an alternator is charging. #1 when you do that and the alternator is working it sees zero voltage in the battery and will then go to max charge and with out a battery that can fry the regulator and that will in turn cause it to put out 90 plus volts at 35 plus amp and if you get between it and the frame or battery that is enough to kill you in a heart beat. And you can will fry the alternator. Sounds like you have a 1 wire set up and most take high RPM to kick in. Me I'll never use one since the 3 wire is so easy to wire up even a 5 year old can do it is given enough info

I had a 10si rebuilt at my local auto electric and he put in a regulator that begins charging just off idle. He orders them from a guy that manufactures them. The guy does a super job and is very reasonable.
