Can someone possibly tell me why my alternator on my super 88 is not working? It has a 12 volt system. I have a 12 volt supply going to the filter side prong and the battery terminal is going to the battery post. The alternator is not putting out 12-14 volts while running. It puts out zereo to .4 volts. even when I rev it up. This is a new alternator because I thought the other one was bad. Any ideas would be a great help.

What is the filter side plug? Do Have you checked to see if you have 12 volts going to the field terminal? How have you wired the ammeter in the system? Next dumb question, what make and model alternator?

I do have 12.6 volts to the filter plug. I have the wire from the alternator terminal going into one side of the ammeter and the other side goes to the battery. I shows no load at all. I do not have anything of the rectifier plug. It is a Delco Remy 62 amp.

Assuming this is the common Delco with internal regulator. If so, #2 pin on the 2 pin edge plug can go down to the big out put stud.

#1 pin requires a momentary voltage to kick start the alternator to charge. On a gas engine with distributor this usually wires through a diode or idiot light to the output of ignition switch.

Is this a Diesel? Some of them do not have a convenient switched 12 volt so an oil pressure switch is used. 12 volts is constant to one side of switch, then when engine starts and oil pressure reaches a certain psi the switch turns on and feeds start voltage to the #1 pin on alternator.

To check #2 pin and large output wire should have battery voltage when off and charge voltage when running.

#1 pin should have 0 volts when off and probably close to charge voltage when running.
