Alternators

My 8N had a one wire when I got it. I added the wires to make it a 3 wire. Now it is charging as soon as engine starts, don't have to wait and rev it to get it to charge.

(quoted from post at 07:39:18 01/23/16) just curious what would happen if a Delco 10si that had been converted to one wire was hooked up as 3 wire.

I went to look at a one wire that would not charge nuttin to lose I excited it, it took off... He said it had been charging as a one wire so we wired it as a 3 wire I see him often he never said it quit working...

I mean an alternator that was a 3 wire, but was taken apart and put back together using whatever parts needed to make it a self exciting 1 wire. Sometimes the alternator comes not mounted to the tractor, and old patched up wires hanging everywhere. Hard to tell what they had going on sometimes. I cut all that out and rewire. I was just just thinking I may have unknowingly done this and if there would be a sign if I did.

t depends, just like diapers. A "one wire" may use one of many different regulators, some will function as a 3 wire, but others absolutely will not.........depends on what VR was put in it.

I akways buy regular 3 wire if I need to replace one. they're cheap enough to not want to rebuild them. The hot alternator thread is what actually got me thinking. The only 1 wire I ever owned boiled the battery when It was brand new. I guess as long as I'm not told it's a one wire when I get them I'll hook them up as 3 wire, or try 1, and if no go, I'll try 3.

es, it is kind of like saying, beer is beer...........just not all the same. Some people apply any experience they ever had with one tractor to all tractors. Bad. A tractor is not a tractor just as a beer is not a beer, and a one-wire is not a one-wire. Life!

arnold, Just noticed your location says "east texas", I now wonder how far apart we are from each other.

I'm glad you posted this thread because with my hot alternator problem I've wondered if I should take it to a shop and have it fixed or just buy another one.

Sounds like it may be easier and almost cheaper to buy one.

Where would you all buy a new alternator at if you needed one?

Is 105 amps ok for the alternators for these N tractors?

Found an alternator on Ebay but it says 105 amps and I wanted to make sure that was ok.

Thanks.

I think I found my answer. I see 63 amp ones and that's what I believe I'd need.

One other question.

Oreilly has a different brand than Delco, would you guys trust those off brands or just go with Delco?

Thanks again.

The last one I had repaired was 35 bucks. I bought a remanvfactured one yesterday for 42.59 at NAPA with exchange. They swapped the pulley for free. I'm deep in the piney woods near Nacogdoches.

Thanks for the info! You're a little further east than me. I'm in between Ennis and Kaufman. I've heard there's great hog hunting in the piney area.

Thanks again, I'll give napa a call. Did you get a Delco or different brand?

I wasn't downing 1 wires, just sayin. I like the 3 wire setup with a 194 bulb in line as a resistor/alternator light.

It's a Delco knockoff I'm sure. it looks like a Delco wth a smoother case. It's a 63 amp.

Can somebody please tell me if I'm running a 3 wire or 1 wire setup?

I believe a 3 wire but when I read how the wires should be ran I don't think mine are ran that way, that's why I'm confused.

The blue wire is looped from the alternator connector to the alternator post.

The black wire connects to the ignition.

The red wire WAS connected to the ammeter but it's unhooked now because I was hooking up the volt meter in place of the ammeter.

Do this tell anybody if this is a 1 or 3 wire connection?

I'm replacing the alternator today and wanted to double check what I had wired up now.

Thank you in advance.

If you use a 3 pole ignition switch you don't need any of that extra stuff. The best part is you kill those original style ignition switches...

If I use a 3 or 4 pole switch, I run to the acc., but if I get one with a working switch I leave it. The originals and the remakes are pretty weak. I've had a couple that would shut down just from the spare key swinging on the ring.
