64 4000 diesel SOS. Started in 25 degree temps after sitting a month yesterday. I'm not sure if the glow plugs worked or not. I know the solenoid clicked. After four hours rest, it restarted immediately at midnight. It is pulling my 20kw generator very well. It does make it take notice if the electric water heater kicks in. sure is easy on this high priced diesel fuel too! yep we're in ice country. broken wires, trees etc.

I'll bet that 172 is a good match for a 20kw genny.

Good deal. Mine won't start at 25F unless the glow plugs have been run for a while. It wants the block heater run for some time too!

If you ever need to start it and it's cold, no power. You can use a propane torch (carefully!) to heat the intake manifold. Just an old time trick. But do be careful, don't want to catch it on fire!!

There's the whole chicken & egg thing when you need a block heater to start your tractor running your generator because the power is out. Then, you start your tractor on fire with the torch and the fire department can't get to your house because of the downed power lines. After your tractor catches your house on fire, you are warm for an hour or so until the house is gone along with your tractor. Murphy's Law is right on track all the time!

Hello John , Try silicone spray instead of starting fluid it is not as brutal on the pistons and rings plus it won't catch on Fire . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Glad to hear it started. I'm still waiting for warmer weathe to work on mine. Where did you find the generator? Is it too cost prohibitive to use on a 4000 gas?

I would not want to power the rascal with the late 172 gasoline engine. Seems like you'd be carrying fuel to it all the time. I have an identical 4000 to my diesel that's running out here as we speak, except it's a gasoline model. It was all set up ready to power the genny, but I chose to get the diesel out, take the mower off, and put the drawbar under it. I guess my perspective might be different if all I'd had was the gasoline model and needed electricity. [/color:d47188389c]

It's actually fairly hard to catch it on fire, unless you have oil leaks, fuel leaks, grease globs or other flamable stuff.

But, you're right. It's not a "trick" for the faint of heart, it's a "trick" for the desparate! If you ain't desparate, don't attempt. And keep your fire suppression equipment on hand ....

Tony! How ya do'n? FYI - I drug (dragged?) that 4140 engineering mule into the pole shed. Felt sorry for it sitting out in the cold. Ordered up an injection pump rebuild kit (seals and stuff). Just need to static time it and yank the pump. I have a neighbor that says he used to rebuild them on JD equipment. I figure the $30 on the kit is worth it to see if that engine is really a fresh rebuild.

Hey John,

Larry is in north central KS. I live 35 miles north of St. Joseph, but work there for a home builder/land developer/excavator. We got hit about like St. Joseph, amd most of us out in the country have lost power. A few in the towns have managed to keep power. Worked out for me as I borrowed my brother-in-laws new generator this evening because he still has power. I called around for my boss trying to find a generator and didn't have any luck. Grainger has 25KW PTO generators for roughly $3100, but have to ship out of Chicago and will take a few days. They did have a 40KW available in Kansas City this afternoon, but it goes for $5,500 and that doesn't include a PTO shaft or trailer for it, about another $1000 if you buy from them. Would like to see your tractor some time.

My 172 on propane never fails to start and turns a 15kw no problem. I can fill it from the big tank in the yard.
