800 Ford Tractor. Installed a new regulator and ammeter hand is not steady, shows charge from 0-20 Amps but does not give a steady needle. 6 volt system. Also have same reading on my SMTA 6 Volt. Any Ideas??

Someone on the ntractor board had a similar problem awhile back . I think he was adviced to check his wiring on the amp guage & the VR . I'm not knowledged enough to help other than say maybe you could go there & ask . Maybe he'll see your question & help you out .If I can be of any other help let me know . Good luck & God bless, Ken

Could be a couple/three things.

1, If it's a new 'cheaper' gauge.. it may not have a compensated (dampened ) movement.. and is just quickly responding to the brush noise coming off the armature. Most ammeters are shunt-voltmeters anyway.. and the cheaper the movement the more it moves.

2, you could have worn brushes that are bouncing or not making good contact with the commie.. thus making a bouncy reading.

3, Could have proud mica insulation between the segments.. you can undercut this with a broke hacksaw blade.. etc.

Could ahve any combination of these issues.

I'd put an analog voltmeter on the battery.. and if the charge votlage is int he 7.x volt range, and doesn't drop with a load, like the lamps on... I'd be inclined to ignore it. I have a cheapy older ammeter on my 660.. thing vibrates like a hummingbirds wings.. but I've never had to jump the tractor off.. so.. I'm not messing with it till I need to...

I think you are right about the ammeter. I'll put a volt meter on the battry and it shows output I'll forget it til the reg goes bad again. I appreciate the reply. Thanks

Another thing.. the field bias resistor on the bottom of the reg may be open.. that would cause a bouncy needle as field curent would bounce between none and all, without the bias resistor keeping some field current going.. etc.. however.. as long as she's keeping the battery up.. .. it's cheaper to leave it be.. unless it really bothers you.. etc... and it really won't hurt nything.

if the brushes are worn or the mica is tall.. it will just continure that way till it no longer charges and then you can address it.. same with vr...
