In an effort to run over my own crankshaft some night, here are some pictures of an Allis Chalmers 4" tall head from a 226 engine that I have re worked. You can see in the photo the yellow outline, that is where the original port was. I raised it and angled it down twards the valve. In another picture you can see a Snap On wrench passed through the intake port, through the valve and into the cylinder. You never know when you may need to get a 1 1/16 wrench in your engine.
I don't know how the pictures will turn out, I am not a photographer. The head is getting close to done and I took and cut the ports a bit to test again. I've done a lot of testing, cutting, and more testing trying to hone in on what is going to give me hopefully optimum results. SO far it's pulled some pretty good tests for flow and uniform velocities. It really sounds healthy on the bench also, not rough like a lot of heads. The exhaust still needs some work and the intake is able to suppoort more valve yet. There isn't enough material left to hold intake guides, so I'm in the process of makeing a plate that bolts on top of the head that has the guide bosses and spring pockets machined into it. I had cut things apart in the mill, fabricated metal to fit in the water jacket and then started filling. I made a sleve in the face of the head so I have a solid refrence point to blend into and installed it after I had done some of the testing to figure out where I wanted it.
I go see a fella now and then that's got 35 years doing this type of thing for some major companies, race teams, aftermarket manufacture companies, etc. I'm lucky that he will share a little of his experiences and knowledge. and keep me pointed in the right direction.
This isn't any good for an engine that is governed or someone pulling in a 4 mph class, but it's intentions are for a high RPM engine, a new engine I've been working on. It probably isn't going to make any power below 3000 RPM, but I hope when the big Holley opens up, the shortblock stays intact. It's gong to take some time to get the whole project togather.
I've also got some pictures of my old Leroi head worked over, and some of a new solid 8 port penthouse port head that a few of us have been messing around on that I'll try and get up sometime soon.
